I've tried the Cree Cr6, Phillips Airflux, and Lighting Science Definities.

If you want a screw in bulb that matches the beam pattern of a BR30 or BR40 (70-90ð), I'd go with the Philips. Their Br30 is plenty bright (730 lumens), but their BR40 (800 lumens) has about 2/3rd the lumens of an old fashioned 120watt incandescent Br40. 2700k available at Home Depot.

The Lighting Science GP30 and GP40 are in some ways lousy B30 and Br40s -- their beams are much too wide, and this dilutes the beam too much, despite having 900+ lumens. But if you think your BR bulbs don't light enough of a room's area, this wider beam might be just what you need (120ð). Was available as a Home Depot Ecosmart at 2700k (straight white heat sink), or online as Lighting Science (curved heat sink) at 2700k and 3000k.

If the new Cree Br30 is anything like their CR6, it will have a similar beam pattern to the Phillips but be a little dimmer. But, I'm shying away from them for now, as their new cheap A19 bulb has a lot of 120hz flicker and some people report buzzing.

While walking through Home Depot today, I saw one of the new Lighting Science BR30s and BR40s (rebranded as Ecosmart). I saw these listed earlier this week on LSGC's LightFair 2013 site, but there were no mention of specs.

For kicks, I bought one, as 50% of the lights in our house are BR40s. Compared to their previous effort, the GP40, the BR40 is much lighter. Gone is the big aluminum heatsink. It's been replaced with some sort of lightweight plastic height sink. It seems to dim as well as before (comparable to the Philips Airflux I had on the same circuit), which means it dims a lot, but not to the barely-glowing nightlight level of an incandescent. This was on a Lutron Skylark dimmer -- the regular ones, not the fancy LED ones with the adjustable internal trimpot.

The good news is that they appear to have a beam spread that is close to a regular BR40. I don't have any measuring equipment, but it seemed very close to the Philips Airflux Br30 in the same room. Later tonight I try it in our kitchen (which is full of the old GP40s) to see if it really has a tighter beam.

As an added bonus, it is much shorter than a regular BR40. I compare it a Br40 and a Par38 I had laying around in our closet, and the length is much closer to the PAR38. That's good news, as many of the newer insulation-rated fixtures don't allow BR40s to recess very far.

I'm not sure if I'll keep it or not. I prefer something a little whiter, say around 3000k, so I might return it and pony-up for the Lighting Science branded versions which are available in 2700k, 3000k, 4000k, and 5000k.

How high are your ceilings? A lot of the BR30 lamps out there might be a bit wide in terms of their light distribution, which ends up not so great for lighting up task areas such as kitchen counters. We just installed some PAR30's (40 degree beam angle) from Tuwago. They claim they are 3000K and it seems about right. So far no problems and they dim well with my standard turn-knob dimmer. Had them for about 5 months now. I bought them when they were over $30.

Thank you everyone for sharing. I will look into the BR40 versions also for the LED's to compare with the PAR38's to see which light would be better for me in my home office. I need light that is not glaring so I can see the paperwork on my desk.

I've been buying Duramax bulbs, Duramax br40 bulbs upc 046677139278, for the past 7 years and love them. I have about 15 of these bulbs in my house in recessed lighting fixtures in my ceiling. I buy some of these bulbs every year. I just went out to buy some more and noticed the packaging changed for the bulbs, no big deal I thought, as the UPC code was the same. But, when I got them home, these bulbs are slightly different and NO LONGER FIT in my ceiling recessed housings. The old bulbs, which I still have, have a chrome finish on the neck, whereas the new bulbs are all white on the neck. Eventhough the UPC is the same, the dfeinitely changed. The old bulbs were made in mexico, and the new packaged bulbs are made in china, and the necks of the bulbs are slightly different, and this change doesn't let them fit in my housings. I'd like to know why this bulb changed in physical size if the UPC is the same? Maybe phillips isn't aware of this and it's a defect? I really need bulbs that will fit and have been using these same bulbs for 7 years as I mentioned earlier, and I buy "duramax br40's" because they last long, but now don't fit.

Again, the new packing is the same UPC!! Here you will also see the old bulb, which has chrome neck, and you can see how the new bulb on the right has CHANGED. But again, same model number!

jasonnb: Can you upgrade to LED retrofits - like the Cree CR-6? The CR-6 is a perennial favorite around here. More light, higher quality light (in my opinion, but it is rated with a CRI of 90+), excellent dimmability, vastly longer life, and uses 1/7th as much electricity as those BR40s.

Instead of changing out the whole fixture, why not try one of these Phillips BR40 led bulbs and see if they fit? They should be a little brighter, too.
