can i use brighter led/cfl bulbs in fixtures?

My older fixtures often were made for, say, 40 or 60 watt bulbs. Can I use LED and CFL bulbs that give off more light since they use less electricity? I have been assuming yes but actually haven't seen this said anywhere. Thanks! This feels like a really dumb question.
