Advice/help for family room lighting with 8 foot ceiling.

My home is coming up on 30 years and needs a bit of updating. I have 8 foot ceilings in my small family room (12X14) with a light soffit along one wall above the fireplace and television with three recessed can lights on a dimmer. The family room is combined with a small kitchen/eating nook and my husband would like to install about six additional can lights in the family room and IÃ¢ÂÂm opposed since I find the three existing can lights to be a bit distracting while reclined a bit on the sofa. Would it be better to just have one centered ceiling mounted decorative light?

A centered ceiling mounted decorative light may not provide enough lighting.

There are other options such as cove lighting, lighting strips embedded in the crown molding, sconces, floor lamps,...
