Installing pedant lights in can light openings

We would like to install pendant lights over a kitchen peninsula where there are currently can lights. What's the best way to do this? For instance, the hole for the can light is larger than the top of the pendant lights we bought, and what do we need to buy to put inside the existing hole where the can light fixture is?
