Recessed Lighting for 8' Ceiling

We plan to put recessed lighting throughout our home (including the kitchen). I now that there have been lots of improvements in lighting over these past few years.

We have 8' ceilings. I want to be able to dim all the lights. Several questions:

a. What size cans should we use? 5" or 6"?

b. I would prefer flourescent

a) Are flourescent lights dimmable?

b) Do flourescent lights turn on right away or is there is a warm up period?

c. Should we focus on LED or Halogen?

5" cans would be fine. The size of the can will be influenced by other factors
1. Compliance with local energy laws (eg - title 24) and availability of cans of the particular size.
2. Lighting type - CFL or LED.
All the CFL cans that comply with title 24 will come with built in ballast. Most are 6". The bulb itself is separate and not the same as the screw in CFLs that can be purchased at any grocery store.

There are dimmable fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lights require a warm up period.

The LED pricing these days is comparable to CFL lighting (title 24 compliant).
