Can I use a halogen bulb in a xenon fixture?

Posted by ajp76 (My Page) on

I have a bathroom fixture that takes xenon bulbs. The bulbs i would like to replace are KX40FR3M/DC. I grabbed some halogen ones from lowes today that are the same wattage and they fit in the fixture. Can I use the halogen instead of ordering xenon ones?
Thanks

The fixture has a label that says "xenon bulb not intended for halogen use. Caution...RISK of fire MAX 50W xenon lamp. (not tungesten halogen) type T4". Is tungesten halogen the same as a halogen bulb? I'm confused!

Xenon bulbs are typiclly rated for 5000-10,000 hours,
Halogens 2000 hours, while both bulbs run hot, Xenon runs considerably cooler than Halogen, hence the warning on the lamp fixture.

Halogen and tungsten halogen are the same, they are light with a tungsten filament and filled with Halogen gas.

I would return the halogens, if you can, but regardless, use the xenon bulbs.

Of course LED's would be your best choice both for efficiency as well as heat produced (or a lack thereof).

But not as nice for cost and appearance (though they are trying).
