Basement Lighting Options

I am in the process of doing lighting in my basement and I have a few questions about it. I know I want to use LEDs. My ceiling height is 7.5ft. I have about 1200sqft of area to cover. My first question is what size housing to use: 5" or 6"? Second whats the best color to go with: soft white , etc....? What about spacing? I read half the distance of the ceiling height is a quick rule of thumb. Also I know buying a premade kit is expensive so I was wondering if anyone has recommendations on buying the parts separate? Who has the cheapest LEDs from a website or big box store? thx

If you want to use Cree CR lights, you need to use 6" cans.

You could go with 4".

There are a number of tips in the LED recessed lighting thread which was started for kitchens which would apply for other spaces.
