Ceiling joist interfering with recessed lighting

Posted by ranger481vs (My Page) on

I'm starting to work on finalizing the position of the recessed lights that I'm planning to put in my kitchen. My plan shows the cans 12" out from the upper cabinets. All of the locations are fine, except lights 3 and 4, which are located right next to a ceiling joist. I would have to move them closer to the cabinet or further away, but I'm not sure which is the best option? Any suggestions?

Also, whatever I do with the revised position of 3 and 4, should I then match the positions of 5,6 and 7 in relation to the distance from the cabinet?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Follow-up: I think the only option is to move the lights further out, which I'm guesstimating will be about 18" on-center from the cabinets. So, I still wonder if I should match the 18" positions for 5,6 and 7 too. I'm thinking yes, simply to have the light that is cast on the cabinet fronts to be matching. Any thoughts otherwise? Thanks, again. -Matt

RE: Ceiling joist interfering with recessed lighting

Move them way from counter to avoid shadows on cabinets. Then use under cab lights to light the counter.

What are the can lights for?

General illumination?

Put them all the same distance.

Cans are a rater poor source of general lighting. It takes an awful lot of them to provide good coverage.

RE: Ceiling joist interfering with recessed lighting

I put them all at the same distance (17") away from the cabinets. Will also have UCL and 3 pendants above the kitchen island, so I won't be solely relying on the cans for lighting the kitchen. Thanks for confirming my thoughts on distance.
