Alternatives to Chain in Hanging Vintage Swag Lamps?

If I wanted to hang a vintage hanging light fixture but didn't want chain, is there another alternative? I'll try to link to the kind of fixture I'm talking about:

You can make a fabric tube to cover the chain - we do that for most of the chandeliers that we manufacture. You will still have a chain, but you won't have to see it.

I like the look of the fabric tube, but wonder how in the world it could be kept clean. Anyone know?
