How high are your ceilings, and how far apart are the cans?

I was thinking of going with 8 x 4" cans in a 14x10 kitchen, but I have to reconsider.

Also, I believe different bulbs have difference beam spreads as well, so you should see if you can find a bulb with a wider beam.

Ceiling is 8 feet and the cans are about 6 feet apart. L Shape configuration. If I could find a flood that would sit flush with the ceiling and was 3" wide, that would probably do the trick but the little bulbs that the electrician installed are just that...little! They just don't do it.

cdigs, you might be able to use 4" cans, but I'd go for 10 of them rather than 8. That's assuming you've got 8' ceilings. If your ceilings are higher, I would definitely go for 5" or 6" cans.

Michaelli, sorry but you're stuck. Six feet apart is much too widely spaced with 8' ceilings; you would have had problems even with the 6" cans. With 4" cans they should be spaced no more than three and a half feet apart. Since the ones you've got are six feet apart, I'd keep them and add more cans in between for 3' spacing - with the right bulbs, that will give you plenty of light.

If you wanted to try without adding more cans, try just changing the trims to something that has the bulb flush with the ceiling and not set back in the can so you can get the max light beam... also check some of the bulb sites for flood bulbs with a min of 40 degree beam. You really need more cans but that could cost a fair amount, I guess you have to ask yourself how much does it bother you and how much aggravation do you want to go through to fix it?

But 6" cans would be much better right?

6" cans would give you more light (potentially much more), but it would still be uneven.

Everyone is struggling with these cans. One long rectangular fluorescent fixture overhead gives such superior lighting. Why not look for an attractive one? After all, the kitchen should be functional first and foremost. Don't be bullied into this latest fad in lighting.

I say rip out the cans and put in a regular flouresent light fixture. Recessed lighting is usually a disappointment and waste of energy.

I wonder if low-voltage monorail with adjustable spotlights would provide the extra illumination, rather than adding more cans?
