Lighting plan for kitchen

Help - doing a kitchen remodel and clueless. The contractors have told me to pick out some cans. They haven't told me if they have a plan for lighting, but I know they are no experts.

Currently there are 3 cans incandescent with 65 watt bulbs over the island and a large fluorescent light fixture which is going.

I do plan on some under cabinet lighting. No clue how much or what type I should have. The range is being switched over to gas, so there is plenty of electric to tap into.

I am attaching a picture with the new layout and some notes. The cabinets will be up to the ceiling with crown molding.

Thank you for nay help you can give me. I like a bright kit hen..am always turning on lights in other people's kitchen. Plus, we do use the kitchen to light the adjacent family room, which has only lamps.
