Kitchen lights - How many?

Hi!

I have a 11x10 kitchen and the ceiling height is 8 feet. I would like to install recessed lights to make the kitchen look more roomy.

There is a dinning table in a corner that I would like to have sufficient lighting. I also want to make sure the work areas such as stove and sink have sufficient lighting.

How do I calculate how many recessed lights I should install and what size the fixtures should be?

I appreciate your help.

You could compute the number based on the light output per can vs that required for the room size.

Other factors such as style - spot, other lighting fixtures would also come into play.

I would like to install 4 recessed lights, two of which are close to the stove and sink area and two near the small dinning table. The distance between the two lights in each set is around 4.5 feet. Should I use 4" or 5" recessed cans? Is 6" recess cans too big?
