Basic can light LED confusion

Hi,

Much of our house was damaged when a tree crashed into it, and now it's pretty much been stripped down to studs and such. So there's no ceiling in most places-- just rafters and the floor above.

We will have recessed lighting in many/most rooms. I am interested in the warm LED can lights-- CRE or similar.

But I see discussions of retrofit vs new construction and I'm confused, because I thought you could use an LED bulb in any fixture.

We're essentially starting from scratch. What parts/bulbs/whatever do we need? How do I make an apples-to-apples comparison in terms of price difference?

I am trying to figure out what it would cost to put in traditional cans vs LED, and I don't know if it's a can-and-bulb question or a bulbs-only question. In other words, are cans just cans, and you screw in LED or whatever? or are there different modules you install for LEDs?

Thanks in advance!
