Recessed Lighting

Would like to replace the lighting fixture in Kitchen with remodel IC 5 inch recessed lighting. The electrical box for the light was mounted against a ceiling joist. Can the remodel cans (IC contact) be placed right against the joist? Will I be able to use the clips? Like to know if anyone has attempted this. I would move them over a little but the Hi-Hats would be perfectly centered in the room if I could mount against joist.

Remodel cans use the ceiling board for support. It is better to have a slight gap between the joist and the can so that the clips around the can (especially on the side closest to the joist) have something to grab onto.

An alternative is to use a surface mount light (e.g. - Lighting Science Glimpse, Halo/ Sylvania LED surface mount downlght) that uses the electrical box.
