Stretching out a sweater

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but it's the closest one, so here goes: I've had this lambswool/angora/nylon sweater for years and it's fine, but I wish it were bigger/baggier and longer so I could wear it over leggings (i.e., covering my bottom and a bit of my thighs). I'm wondering if it would be possible to wet it completely and then sort of stretch it in all directions and lay it out to dry flat. Would this work? Thanks!

It might work, but it may not stretch more than a couple of inches. Is the sweater labeled washable? Otherwise, the water might make it shrink and/or the color (dye) to run/fade/bleed. On the other hand, if you're not wearing the sweater at all, and you're willing to risk the damage, go for it. With success, you'll have a very wearable garment and a cute look.

It's supposed to be dry cleaned, which I actually just had done, but I don't think water would hurt it. I've had it forever. I don't wear it that much so like you said, I'm willing to risk whatever happens to it. Thanks :-)

Want to 'unshrink' a wool sweater?

Gently boil the sweater in a solution of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Gently boil 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water and squeeze out excess. Dry flat. Despite the horrible smell while cooking, it works!

Thanks, just might try it!

The water and vinegar solution and the boiling worked!! The sweater is now long enough to wear over these adorable leggings I ordered from Urban Outfitters. Thanks for the tip!
