Softer towels with STPP

We've been satisfied with our towels, don't mind if they're a little rough (not sandpaper rough, but not "Downy Soft" either). But after my experience with using STPP on a hard-to-clean black comforter, which came out much cleaner, and also softer, I tried STPP on a towel wash. Added STPP to the usual Sears Free powder detergent and Clorox 2 Free powder. Sure enough, the result is noticeably softer than before. Don't know if I'll keep washing my towels that way, but wanted to try it, in case it'll help those here with rough towel complaints.

Do you have hard or soft water?

Marginally hard, just hard enough to consider using a softener, which we don't.

Some towels will get stiff washing them in hot water too cuz the shrink. Instead of having nice poofy terry, you end up with stiff shrunken little roaps. I found that out the hard way with some of mine. LOL!

I used STPP with Persil for a few years and it made a nice difference with our laundry. I stopped using it and Persil for the past years and now our towels are like sand paper. Hope to cure that soon by going back to my Persil STPP blend again.

Where do you purchase STTP? I did a Google search but the results were clear as mud! I would like to try it for towels.

You can get STPP from the Chemistry Store (link below). Caution, the shipping is nearly as much as the STPP. You can read more about it by checking out FAQ at the top of the page. -Grainlady

Grainlady, maybe you are in a ship limited area? I just checked a 50lb bag cost 30.00 to ship UPS ground. That is a 100.00 bag. All told 130.00 or about 2.60 per pound. Not too bad and would last a long time if used in moderation.

fordtech, I wouldn't advise anyone to buy 50 or 100 pounds of STPP. Moisture in the air does degrade STPP over time, and since you only use about a tablespoon per load, it would take literally years of constant use to go through 50 pounds. By that time, it would probably have degraded into the less-desirable TSP. Grainlady is probably referring to the Chemistry Store's UPS shipping policy. Their shipping adds something like $10 to a $12 (~5 pound?) bucket of STPP.

Yes, I would probably limit myself to the 27lb bucket which would last about 2.5 years. I saw no surcharge for UPS for STPP at check out. They never charged me that before so Ill have to check that out again.
