Does anyone have 2 laundry rooms? Pros/Cons?

Hi,
We are purchasing and finishing a spec house that has a completed laundry room on the ground floor (where the Master is located) and a small space for a laundry room on the 2nd floor (where the kids rooms are located). I am debating about whether to complete the second floor laundry room as it was intended or create another use for the space. The room could be used for storage or a small craft room for the kids.

Does anyone have a similar set-up? Any thoughts? I have a girlfriend who has the same arrangement and says it is very efficient because the clothes don't need to be taken up & down the stairs.
Thanks!

I did a stack on my 2nd floor, 2nd laundry room. Then there is room for other things as well.

If I had a 2 story I would definitely want a laundry room on each floor.

We are in the middle of a two story build. We put in a laundry chute. Ihad thought about a second laundry room, but paid attention to how I do my laundry. I spend most of my time in the kitchen, so going upstairs throughout the day to keep up with the laundry was not appealing. The only person I know that has 2 laundry rooms takes care of her own and her hubby's laundry, but has a maid to do the kids in the other laundry room.

Tanem makes a good point on the laundry chute and evaluating how you do laundry.

I should have expanded my thinking too as my second floor is for a daughter and grandson, my daughter has gone back to school. So that laundry is for her. When she moves out and that floor is mostly for guests, they can use it when needed.

My son will have the basement level, and I was going to put one down there, but decided he can bring his laundry up to the main laundry room.

Our master, and everything for our old age is on the main floor so that made that laundry room decision an easy one.

When my daughters were both home, and doing lots of laundry, they did their own, so a 2nd floor laundry would have been very handy for them. Especially when they put it in and forget about it. Every time I would want to use the washer or dryer, seems like there was always something already in it.

We are still building but I am getting a rack for my front loads so it makes them stackable so the w/d upstairs is a full size, so even if a person only used it for bedding etc, it can handle it.

Our old house, laundry was in the basement of a 2 story, with no chute. I would tend to take it all down there in hampers (3 stories) so I was the chute, and I still hated going down there to do laundry. So my new laundry is going to be close to the kitchen also, so I am going to love that. I thought about a w/d closet in the master or close but we come in dirty alot and strip down etc so wanted to keep the laundry over by the mudroom, which is close to the kitchen, so I think it is all going to work out great.

I will say though, that we are renting a 1965 ranch, with a laundry closet in the bathroom, with another huge closet for dirty clothes.... now that is handy. There is only one tub/shower in the house, so everyone's dirty clothes are right there. It is a pretty nice set up actually.

We completed a closet laundry on our first floor a few months ago. Our old laundry is in the basement. We love the set-up, but we are in a different position than you. We are essentially empty-nesters and my wife (who does most of the laundry), has some mobility problems, so wanted to minimize stair-climbing. The new laundry accomplishes that just fine. We only use the basement laundry now for large sheets and loads of towels. Actually, we could use the compact machines for some of that, but we don't. Anyway, I'd suggest that you just live with your one laundry for a while and see how you like it. It's great that you have the option for the future, but you may not be in that house forever, so why go to the expense of purchasing more new machines now? Just my 2 cents.

We had second laundry for years in the guest room in the bsement. (we inherited it that way....) The reality is that my guests don't stay long enough to really use it. I think I used it less than a dozen times in many years! We finally took it out because we never used it and we wanted the space back.

The only laundry we now have is on the bedroom floor.

If and when my kids move to the basement bedrooms, and they are doing their own laundry, (these are two ifs that may never happen) then we may put it back for them. We still have the plumbing in place.

Food for thought...thanks for the input. I think it's a good point to evaluate how I do my laundry. hmm...

If you decide not to put in the second laundry room may I have it? My W/D is stacked in the kitchen and I would love to have even a little laundry room. Seriously, the kitchen is a great place for the W/D but I could use the space for a pantry.

We are building our empty nest house. The main laundry room is close to the master closet. On the second floor where the other bedrooms are, I plan to have the rough in plumbing in the wall for a second laundry room off the game room, should the next owners / grown children need it, it'll be so easy to finish out, but I don't have the expense of it. I think using your space as storage or a craft room is a good idea. My niece has 3 laundry areas...one on each floor of her house, but she also has 2 babies upstairs, and downstairs is the guest area. She uses all three laundry areas and loves that she doesn't have to haul laundry around.

We have side-by-side front loaders on pedestals in a downstairs laundry room and stacked front loaders in a closet in the upstairs hall bathroom. Our master bedroom is downstairs along with another bedroom plus 4 bedrooms upstairs. In addition to the obvious advantage of not having to carry clothes up and down stairs, it's nice to have two sets of washers and dryers when there is a lot of laundry or I want to use a lengthy laundry cycle. An added benefit is that when there is a problem with a washer or dryer, it won't be a crisis because I have a spare.
