| Charlie's Soap! No #2 or #3 necessary when you are satisfied with #1. Thanks to this forum, I learned about Charlie's and started using it 2 years ago and have only used about half of the 5-gallon bucket (1280-loads). When we purchased the bucket we thought it would last at least 3.5 years - and at the time only cost 9-cents per load. Never use liquid softener or softener sheets, so we save by not using that product. The only add-in I occasionally use (maybe 6 times a year) is some Cascade Dishwasher Detergent to the whites load. -Grainlady |

| Persil powder, Tide powder...and Dreft. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| #1 Persil Color Gel for darks and coloured items & Persil Universal Gel for Whites. #2 Tide he Powder (but it leaves a slight powdery residue in my units). Someone told me Tide uses a lot of fillers in their powdered detergents. I have a love/hate relationship with the smell. Sometimes I cannot get enough of the smell, and sometimes it is heavy and over-perfumated. Tide he powder does not smell clean and "mountain fresh"...its like a perfume. #3 Tide he Liquid with Color Clean Bleach Alternative. Smells great, cleans well. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Powders!

| lol, supposed to be favorite powders!! |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| Persil, Persil, Persil. Don't bother wasting my money on anything else. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| I do have to agree for the most part with brutuses. Persil is pretty amazing! I do not like the powder, and I hate the Megaperls....but I love the Persil liquid Color Gel and Universal Gel. This weekend I spent (er, wasted) about $60 ordering The Laundress liquid detergent, softener and dryer sheets from NY. Should arrive in about a week. We'll see how it compares to Persil (which is the #1 seller year after year in Germany, the UK and a lot of other Euro countries)! |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| 1) Tide HE powder (love the scent and cleaning power) 2) Sears Ultra Wash powder (not as much scent, but good cleaning power at a GREAT price) 3) not a powder, but my #3 fave detergent is a tie between Tide HE Total Care and Woolite HE |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| deutch, I accidentally ordered the mega pearls and I don't like that variety of the product either. I didn't care for the liquid only because I need something that deep cleans and I didn't find the liquid did as good a job as the regular powder. I hate to tell you this, but I found the Laundress the biggest rip off out there. I bought the fabric sheets and the liquid. OMG, what a rip. The liquid is OK for fine clothing, I guess, but not any better or as good as other liquids like Woolite. As for the fabric softener sheets, well, let's just say I'm still waiting for the softness and/or a nice fragrance. It was like putting plain paper in my dryer. They smell good coming out of the box, but did nothing for my clothes. I think Laundress is making a killing because of their slick advertising. They got me, but only once. LOL I hope your experience is much better than mine. Please let us know. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| OH no brutuses!!! In the back of my mind, I was worried that The Laundress was just all fancy packaging, and a slick website! I hope I am not disappointed. I noticed they do not accept any returns or exchanges. That is not a good sign!!! Persil Color Gel and Universal Gel (liquids) were re-formulated somewhat recently...and they really deep clean. I have a 3 year old boy in Preschool, who has a deep love affair with mud and the sand box & does art classes with lots of different paints and mediums...and the new Persil liquid (gel) really deep clean!!! |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| deutch, I should have returned my things to Laundress, but didn't realize about the garauntee. Thanks for the heads up on the gel forumla's. I'll have to check that out. The one I had was for dark colors only so I'm sure that's why it was so gentle. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| Deutch, I'm not 100% happy with The Laundress either. The detergents (I've tried Signature, Whites, Dark) create so MUCH foam that my Miele keeps adding rinses (and I use HALF the recommended amount for front loaders). I've written to them but they never replied.... |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| Thanks rudin1969. I too have a Miele (3rd Miele washer and dryer over the years!). I emailed The Laundress and tried to cancel the order. I sent them 2 emails, to 2 different depts. I hope they let me cancel the order, before it ships on Monday 10/19/09. I can not return the items, and the order was over $60.00. I feel so stupid and duped. I'm a sucker sometimes :( |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
It would be interesting to hear from other people who've used The Laundress. Did you experience any problems with foaming? Thanks |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| deutsch, hope they can stop the shipment. If not, don't open when you receive and then ask if you can return it unopened. Please don't feel stupid. Some of us have been dooped by the pretty packaging and intoxicating sales pitch/product descriptions. rudin, yes I had foaming also. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| Hey brutuses and rudin1969. I emailed and called The Laundress in NY. They were actually (and surprisingly nice). They said they will cancel and credit my AMEX card for the detergent, softener and fabric sheets. They didn't have access to my card #, so I had to give them my CC info over the phone (which I didn't like), but I will just monitor my CC statement, to make sure the credit goes thru, and no "extras" show up. SO happy I cancelled this stuff. I think I would have been very disappointed!! THANK YOU for all your help and advice....I appreciate it a lot!!! |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

1) Tide w/bleach original powder 2) Sears powder w/enzymes or oxy (they do not leave residues on my darks) 3) any Mexican powder detergent, Roma or Foca |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| I'm so glad you were able to cancel. I think you made the right decision. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

Persil is absolute number one. Mexican Roma,Focca and Ariel follows. Hate Tide w/passion. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

I've been currently using BOLD Plus Powder detergent and have been very pleased with it. It's not labeled HE, but it's very low sudsing and rinses easily. Also use CHEER Bright & Clean Powder. Again, not labeled HE, but low sudsing and seems to really brighten whites. I also have used the discount brand SUN w/color safe bleach Powder detergent and liked that too. I really wanted to like Sears Powder detergent, but I found it faded our clothes too much. It has to be the optical brighteners in it, because I've been careful not to use detergents with brighteners any more and have not had a fading problem since. I'd like to try the SURF powder detergent someone mentioned in another post. I'll have to be on the lookout for it. I also wanted to try Ariel, but since the bag is only in Spanish, I don't know one formula from another, and there are three different ones to choose from. Janet |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| Janet, the Sears powdered detergent does not fade our clothes. I wonder why the difference? |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
• Charlie's Soap I like it because it works well and is so versatile. I recently used it to clean the carpet floor mats in my car. It did a great job and rinsed out very well. • Roma or Foca (Mexican brands) love how inexpensive they are! and they do a great job cleaning. I only wish they made an UNscented version also without the optical brighteners. I mainly use these for presoaking things like really dirty cleaning towels and gardening clothes. • Biokleen Premium Powder formerly: • Tide I used mostly Tide powder for many years until my husband started having allergic reactions to it. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| Re fading: Tide says their Total Care product protects colors through a "proprietary Protective Fiber Complex" which "conditions your wash water to help prevent damage from chlorine and mineral deposits, minimizing fading and helping to keep colors bright." This makes me think that a "fading" detergent is one which doesn't adequately protect against the fading action of substances in the water. So maybe i_dig_it's water contains more chlorine and/or minerals than mara_2008's water, and Sears detergent can't deal with it. Do optical brighteners really cause permanent fading, or is it a temporary effect that a non-optical-brightening detergent will eventually wash out? |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
Yes, our water here is very hard, running about 27gr, and it also probably has a high chlorine level as well, so that all probably figures into how the detergents with optical brighteners react. Since I quit using the Sears on our clothing (I now only use it for washing rags and rugs), I have not noticed a reversal in the fading, and it has been about 8 months. Janet |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| I can't see how optical brighteners would cause fading. Brightening of dark colors, yes, but not progressive fading, where the fabric appears lighter and lighter with successive washings. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| Le Blanc Laundry Wash seems to be my current flavor, and Le Blanc/L'Amour Towel Wash for soft, fluffy bath towels! |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?
| | |
| Vaska -- not available as a powder (yet)! A "green" detergent that actually cleans the heavy-duty crud my kids come up with well. |

| What is LeBlanc laundry wash? Never heard of it. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

If I remember correctly, its been awhile since I had to buy any, on the Mexican laundry detergent look for "baja espuma". Love Ariel, second fav is Persil although I don't buy it because of the price. Don't have a third. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| I would have to say 1. Whatever is on sale and I have a coupon for it, and I can get it nearly free! (hey, free detergent is my favorite, what can I say) 2. With the above stated I would have to go with in no particular order, Gain, Tide or Costco brand detergents. Those seem to get my clothing the cleanest. I just with Gain and Tide weren't so heavily scented. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

| 1) Charlie's Soap Powder(This will usually get out what others don't with soaking, but I must admit other detergents work faster at removing some common soils and I really do not have a lot of time anymore to devote to laundry.) 2) Tide HE Powder(Helps with mold issues and gets many common soils out quicker making my job a little easier.) 3) Sears Powder right now, but could change with some experimenting. Currently trying Cheer powder as I heard here it was low sudsing to some degree. Someone else recommended Bold Plus and I have also heard a lot about Persil. Gain Powder HE is okay, but I can only use it if I am air drying outside. Otherwise the perfume in it is way to strong and I have problems with my nose plugging up and rashes. Air drying disappates (spelling) a lot of the perfume. Happy Laundering, Heidi |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

1. Persil Megaperls 2. Persil Color Megaperls 3. Charlie's Soap (for delicates and hand washables) |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

1. Sears with SF 2. Seventh Generation white flower 3. Sunlight HE I would like to try Persil but can't get over the sticker shock, at least in Canada. |
RE: Top 3 Fave Detergents?

1.Ecos (plant based detergent) 2. Down east (plant based) 3. there is no 3 yet |
