Tide he Powder revisited

Many of you regulars know that I always say I have a love-hate relationship with Tide he Powder. There are times when I cannot get enough of the soft, powdery-perfumated scent & then there are times when I desire a clean, "laundry soap smell"...like me beloved Persil!

One of the reasons I stopped using Tide he Powder is because after my wash is done, and the drum of my front loader (Miele W4840) is dry...there is a prominent white, soft powder residue. If there is such a powder residue left on the drum after 2 rinse cycles...what's on my clothes???

Since I had Miele re-program my W4840 to Water+ (greatly increased water levels during the wash and double rinse cycles) a few weeks ago, I wanted to try Tide he powder again. So yesterday (10/30) I ran 3 loads with Tide he Powder and a little Purex Fabric softener mixed with white distilled vinegar in the designated FS compartment (about a 50/50 blend). After ALL 3 loads, and the wash drum was dry....there it was!!! The drum was coated in a super fine, white powder residue. Some of the honeycomb water holes in the wash drum were somewhat full of powder residue too. The stainless looked fine, but I think it's awful with the powder that is left behing from all the fillers Tide uses. I ran a Express cycle on Sanitize with nothing but white vinegar...and the drum looks amazing now and totally clean, sparkling new!!!

I'm in a phase where I LOVE the smell of Tide he Powder, but finally made peace that I cannot use it. I dumped the whole box of powder in the trash this morning (the cardboard box was flattened and put in the recycling:)

My Tide he Powder era has finally ended!!! :(

Do you use the powder universal Persil or just the gel?
If the powder how much do you use for a load of towels/ whites with very hot water.

I used about 130ml and when the wash water drained and started to spin alot of suds were produced causing the machine to go into some suds reduction cycle.
130ml did not seem excessive considering what the box label says to use.
Thanks for your input, also I have tried Gain HE and felt like a film was left on the clothing - sounds the same as your Tide experience.

Hi Wayne98. I do not like Persil Powder. I find the Universal powder too strong, and for sure cannot be used on colours!

I use Persil Color gel (liquid) and Persil Universal Gel (liquid). Depending on the size of the wash load, I use between 50ml and 75ml. 130ml is a VERY large dose for a front loader. It would be fine in a top loader, that uses an enormous amount of water (and energy:(

I use the Universal Gel (liquid) exclusively for white clothing and white towels (all my towels are white...bath, hand, face, kitchen...). I use Sanitize and usually 75ml of detergent, since my towel load is large. Most of the time I use a little Clorox Care Gentle Bleach too for my white towels.

You should have tried to dissolve the Tide in a jar with hot water and add to the tub as liquid when you loaded the clothes and see if this made any difference.
I didn't notice the white powder every time but then it could be the times I did see it I might have used too much?
Also, sometimes I think softeners cause detergents to act different. I have used some(forget what now, seems like Cheer) that when you used softener with it there would be something on the clothes that looked like lint but wasn't. Downy told me it was a "reaction" it had with the detergent I used. I do remember that I used Final Touch softener years ago and it was the WORST for leaving the stuff on the clothes. The vinegar you are using should clean your tub and clothes of any build up.

Thanks sparky823. Yeah, the white distilled vinegar made the stainless wash drum on my Miele shine beautifully. I have been mixing my Fabric Softener with equal parts white vinegar (sometimes more vinegar). It actually works great, erases any trace smells of vinegar, makes my clothes smell great, feel soft...and the machine looks shiny and clean!!

Deutsch100, do you have hard water? If so, the white residue you are seeing could be calcium carbonate precipitating out of your water and onto your drum. I would suggest adding a water softening agent, or perhaps getting a water softener for your home. The other alternative, which will add phosphates to your wash water, is to add a tablespoon or two of STPP (sodium tripolyphosphate) which will hold the calcium carbonate in solution and prevent it from precipitating out of your wash water.

Hey again Sshrivastava....wow, we're having a Laundry Room Forum affair :)

We do not have hard water. It was tested by Miele 2 years ago, when they installed our Miele La Perla Dishwasher. It is not soft, but no where near what would be defined as Hard.

The white residue only happens with Tide he Powder. Never with any other powders or liquid detergents. I think Tide he Powder just has an insane amount of fillers, that cling to the stainless drum. Can't help but thinking, the clothes are coated too! Just my opinion though!

I use Tide HE powder on some things. I have hard water. Last time I checked it was rated between 8 and 10 grains. When I use the Tide HE powder I only use a 1/4 of a cup for most loads. If I have a load that is really filthy I will use 1/2 cup, but I put the load through an additional quick wash to get out any remaining detergent. It is strong stuff and if you have soft water I can see it being a problem. I may try Persil one of these days.

RE: Tide he Powder revisited

Our water is neither hard nor soft. I recently bought Tide HE powder and have used it on various loads of laundry. Thus far, I have not seen any signs of powder residue at all. I wonder if perhaps the washer might make a difference? Mine is Maytag Bravos.

I like the fresh scent. I do use vinegar in the final rinse, so it's not very strong.

Deutsch100, I noticed that you had the same issue with Charlie's soap too. Also, if you water isn't soft then I would consider it hard, just not super hard. So that in a nutshell is the issue. I lived in Europe for many years, and the water is hard (Still flouncing over the scum that would coat the top of my cup of tea when I used tap water).

Persil is made for hard water conditions such as the water in Europe. That is why Persil is working for you.

I would suggest a water softener for your home as well. I think that might solve a lot of the issues you are having with every soap that is not persil.

I hope this helps ;)
