Laundry room help/washer selection

What is the minimum room width for comfortably using a front load washing machine? I have a 70 inch wide room with about 64 inches of space accounting for the pipes/venting. Both washing machines started leaking within a month of each other and considering they are likely mid 90s vintage I don't think it is worth putting money into them. I am trying to figure out if a front load machine will work. I don't need tons of features but would like the extra capacity. We are a house of 4 with 2 little girls so lots of laundry in the future. My wife would love to have 2 washing machines again but one machine would probably work if it had capacity for the major washes. Wash time and cost are also considerations. Additionally, we do 3 or 4 very small loads a week. The dryer is FL and still works but the door opens towards the camera and is tight in that corner. Door is not reversible.
Attached is a picture of the current laundry room. Please help!
