Whirlpool 2.0 cubic foot washer not going into final spin

My Whirlpool (WFC7500VW1) washer is shutting off with 9 minutes on the timer, not going into final high spin. I ran diagnostics and the final high spin works fine but when running an actual load of clothes, the same thing happens every time. I've checked the drain at the lower right front of the washer. It's always full of water (and I drain it) but there is nothing else in there but water, no debris, etc. All of the water drains out of the washer, the clothes are just very wet because the machine isn't going into the final high spin. Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem last week with my 8-year-old toploader, and a site online said to try cleaning the lid-fastening mechanism, as many times that will fix the problem.

Well, I wiped the outside of the fastener (which looked clean), and inserted the kleenex into the cavity the fastener goes into (and it came out looking clean). Then I set the washer for the second rinse cycle ... and after that everything was fine -- except my nerves!

As it happens, I just put in a load of wash -- the first since the fastener-cleaning incident.

Edited to add: I just took the clothes out of the washer; was very glad to see that it had drained normally!
