Frigidaire vs. Whirlpool stackable??

Posted by love2cook (My Page) on

We need to buy a new washer and have decided to go with a stackable and replace the dryer as well. I am considering the Frigidaire GLEH1642F which is a 1 piece unit and the Whirlpool Duet Sport separate washer and dryer. The cost of the Frigidaire will save us some $ but I am wondering about long term quality. I do not mind paying more if the quality is that much better. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I would not recommend a one piece unit. If one breaks, you are out of luck. Frigidaire is not a top of the line brand. Whirlpool is a much better brand. I feel Whirlpool is a very good brand but I don't consider it top of the line. LG has a much better reputation. Almost any FL and dryer can be stacked.

While I realize Frigidaire is not top of the line I have to keep cost at $1500 or (preferably) less for a variety of reasons. I can appreciate the potential issue w\single unit. If anyone has other suggestions or options I would love to hear them.

Thank you.

$1500 sounds like a lot of money to me. I would hold out for a really good sale.

When I was looking last December for a new W/D set I considered the Frigidare unit because of space limitations. Those models are pretty old technology that will soon disappear. Development of them has stopped and they are being replaced by the stackables. I decided to get the Duet Sport 8500 and I am very glad I did. I got it for $1500 from Best Buy including installation and haul-away. I am very happy with the machines and would recommend them. It appears Whirlpool has discontinued the 8500 and replaced it with the 8400. They seem to be the same as far as I can see. The 8500 has a heater and is slightly bigger than the 8300, which is still available. They work well, have a good selection of cycles and are reasonably priced.

Good luck in your search.

I agree w/ Premier, I just bought a Maytag Epic pair for $1489 (including stacking kit & tax) @ Sears. They were a clearence item to make room for newer models coming in, so that made them cheaper, plus I just happened to be there for a "10% off everything" day; So, I think if you don't HAVE to have one now, I'd try to wait on something like this. I also agree w/ not buying the single unit, b/c then, if you're washer quits, you'd be forced to buy a new washer & dryer instead of just a washer alone. And, I think the single units are much smaller capacity than the seperates. Just my opinion.

Frigidaire is an ok brand. not top line but good enough to do the job with out much fuss. I have a Frigidaire washer but not a single unit w/d set up, mine is a separate unit that can stack with a dryer of the same series of machines. I would stay away from the one piece due to one part of it failing and then you have to toss it all and start again, plus the one piece units are the older type with only 3.1 cubic feet and the small porthole door. moving up to the newer 3.5 cubic foot models gets you more space to wash some king comforters and the bigger door opening make loading and unloading easier. as far as it being a good machine there have not been too many complaints here lately on it and none like the older 3.1 cu ft version with it's bad rear bearing problem that some attribute to using to much non-HE soaps and over sudsing it often. I have had mine for just over two years with no repairs or trouble so far. if you are going to buy Frigidaire I recommend buying stackable units not a one piece unit.

It looks like we will be getting the Whirlpool Duet 8300 washer \ dryer pair. One of the main reasons is it has an end of cycle alarm that can be turned off and the Frigidaire does not. This my sound odd but our current near dead dryer continually buzzes until the door is opened and it drives my wife nuts. So one of the things she absolutely wants is no buzzer or the ability to turn it off. If anyone has any comments about this laundry pair I would love to hear them.

Thank you
