Yes you can use HE detergent in any type of machine, it just wont make many suds (which is a good thing with low water volume machines).

Note, there are HE detergents and HE friendly detergents.
Meaning one is low sudsing and the other is "safe" to use in an HE machine but will probably cause suds. It may say "HE Safe".

Look for the words "for High Efficiency Machines".

I like to switch between power and liquid.
Some say the powder is a better clean and helps keep your machine cleaner.
Liquids dissolve faster especially in cold water.

Those little packets are OK but I'd never use them.
They're overly expensive and I don't want that plastic type casing in my wash.

Tell your kids to do their own laundry or they won't have clean clothes and call it a day.

Any recommendations on how to adjust the HE detergent quantity used in the non HE machine? I have a measuring cap from my Tide liquid detergent with measure lines in the cap but they are for an HE machine.

I never use more than half a capful of liquid or half a scoop of dry, if I have stains I pre-treat them. It's better to error with too little than too much.
