Try a detergent with enzymes. By allergies I'm assuming fragrances. If the Free and Clear was recommended because you have issues with allergies you could try adding borax and using hotter water.

We use All Free and Clear and it works just fine. We also have hard water and for items such as kitchen towels that may be greasy, I find that I need to use a bit more detergent than I would otherwise.

Most studies show that Americans generally use too much detergent, so I was being pretty stingy -- which worked for most things. Just not for a load of dish towels and hot pads that had been used near the grill!

Agree with enzyme product plus more heat. Would also add soak and/or more time in the wash cycle plus extra rinse.

If your machine won't allow this and you have a laundry sink, I would advise warm soak with enzyme-product in the sink before loading. Leave them a 1/2-hour or more. Overnight OK, too. May be a pain, but will help if that's all you've got.

I feel your pain soonbslim. I have a fragrance issue and DH has super sensitive skin. DH is a mechanic so he gets greasy, plus he enjoys working outside alot in his off time so his clothes get very sweaty & stinky. After trying all the major brands on the market in their various forms including the Free & Clear ones and the "baby" detergents, we finally found Charlie's Soap Laundry Detergent--who knew it was made practically in my backyard!?!. The powder form seems to work best for us in our 7 yr old Kenmore front loader. Rinses clean, fragrance & dye free, low sudsing, cleans well & clothes come out soft with no fabric softener required. You may want to give it a whirl.
