fancy dryers? good for more than just stacking?

| We are looking at buying a new washer and dryer (Epic or Duet). I would love to stack them for more room in the laundry area. However, I can't get over the price of matching dryers!
I would love to hear from people who have the expensive matching dryers... what features do you like and use? Are they really better than a regular old dryer? Is there a way I can justify the price? If I hear enough practical reasons, I might be able to justify it. In addition to the stacking, I'm intriqued by those drying trays. Is this a good way to dry sweaters?
thanks for your help |

I love the drying racks. I have dried sweaters, slippers, ball caps so far. It says tennis shoes can be dried on them too. The dryers that match the washers seem to me to be just plain dryers, unless you would use the steam option. I can't say that my front load dryer is any better than my old one. I do have mine stacked, and love the room it gave me. The dryer buttons are up there, but i'm 5'4 and i can reach them. The set does look good stacked and matching! I do use the extra low a lot and the steam for wrinkles (but can use a damp cloth) but i like them real well. I think it looks better for them to match if you stack them. Good Luck

Pretty much all dryers can take a drying rack. If a rack is not already included, such as on lower-end models, it's available as an accessory. Frontloader-match models are largely the same mechanism as toploader-match models ... just wrapped in an upscale cabinet style and with a touch of higher-end features such as steam or whatever. However, it's the cabinet style that allows the stacking option, as that requires control be on the front instead of on a top-mounted console.

My matching LG dryer cost 1000 bucks and the one reason why I paid so much is that the control panel is swapable- when stacked, the controls are on the bottom which is just fabulous! Other than that I really don't care about the extra features on it.

Other than sensor drying, I don't see the advantage.

I've actually taken this a step further: I've recently decided to keep my 13-year old dryer and put the savings towards getting a better-quality washer. I've found that hot water really goes a long way in getting clothes cleaner, so I want a washing machine with a good heater. Reliability is very important to me, so I'm going to get a Miele. My old dryer has a rack and sensor dry, and works fine, so I'm going to keep it until it is no longer cost-effective to repair. Basically it comes down to prioritizing whatever is most important to you: having more floor space, laundry room aesthetics, budget, etc. For me it's all about getting stuff as clean as possible, and I need machines that will fit into a small space. I line dry a lot in the summer so my dryer doesn't get the heavy use that my washer gets. So it lasts a lot longer.

Thanks so much for the input. The people here are always so helpful! It's good to hear the drying racks may be available for the less expensive dryers. The salesperson didn't mention that, of course.

If a rack isn't available from your retailer, call the manufacturer's customer service or check under accessories at their web site, or at other online parts sources. There may be more than one rack for slightly different drum designs on different models within the same manufacturer's dryer line.

I've never used a reverse tumbling dryer, but it's a feature that seems to be worth paying for. It's supposed to reduce tangling. Miele and Electrolux have it, I believe.

Fisher & Paykel's SmartLoad & AeroSmart topload dryers have reverse tumble, and it is effective. However, they are not a stackable-type dryer.
