washer that actually cleans clothes?

I am terrified to purchase a washer. The Whirlpool in our current (rental) house shreds clothes, but doesn't seem to get them very clean. I do not care how much water or energy it uses - the whole purpose is defeated if I have to wash clothes 5 times to get them clean! I also do not care how long it takes - I'm not going to sit there and watch it anyway. I do care that it not shred my clothes, and that it cleans them well. I would prefer steam, as the claim is that it helps with allergens. I would also prefer top loading if at all possible. I would also prefer large capacity. But everything is negotiable if I can just find one that cleans my clothes (and doesn't shred them in the process). Anybody have a washer they really love (on the basis that it gets the clothes really clean?!)

My Maytag Bravos HE toploader seems to fit all your criteria, except one: It does not have steam or an Allergens cycle, but it does have an internal water heater. (I'm pretty sure that other Maytag models have steam and/or Allergen cycle.) Mine is a very large capacity; I can wash king/queen comforters, sleeping bags, and pillows. When I wash clothes with stains, I spray them with Zout. Never have had a problem getting laundry clean.

the Maytag Bravos 980 series does have allergen and a sanitary cycle. If you want a washer that is simple to use, no electronics and a great warranty, go check out a speed queen top loader. I have one after using a HE toploader that started to shed clothes, it washes, fast and everything comes out really clean. Granted some stains will never come out of some clothes.

Just to clarify: My Maytag Bravos toploader has never ever shredded any laundry. It is a fantastic washing machine in every way.
