what color are the stains? rusty colored or much darker brown/black?

They are like stains that you cannot tell if they are wet spots or stains. There are no color to them

Sharon, I've had good success getting those kind of stains out even after they have been through the dryer using Dawn DW liquid.
I just dab some on the spot and let them sit for awhile and then rinse out. Occasionally it won't work, but it works more times than not.

@sharon: These maybe spots left by fabric softner and or dryer sheets.

The BEST way to identify your washer so that you can get proper advice is to cite the MODEL NUMBER from the machine's model/serial tag. The model number provides for people attempting to help you to look up parts diagrams and other service info specific to your machine.

That being said, your machine doesn't have a transmission or any oil-filled or grease-filled component that could be leaking large amounts of oil or grease. The drive shaft bearings have some lubrication but it doesn't "leak" unless displaced by water getting into the bearing due to a bad seal or worn bearing.

You may have a build-up of scrud in the tub ... a waxy/sticky residue accumulated from detergent and fabric softener. Try running the longest, hottest cycle you can get with a dose of Affresh or Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, or LemiShine. More than one treatment may be needed.

Several ways to determine if the bearings are at fault include whether the machine has gotten noisy during spin, if the inner drum is loose when jiggled (JUST the inner drum, separate from how the entire tub bounces on suspension springs), or remove the rear panel and check for grease residue "dripping" down the back of the tub from the drive shaft.
