Barb, are you thinking of making seams with a sewing machine? You could, but I don't think you would be happy with them. The seam would have little "give" and might hang funny when the sweater stretches. Or it would tear the seam. You might try a strange version of steeking. Before cutting the sweater, use your sewing machine to zigzag stitch what will end up being a selvage (about a quarter inch past where you want the seam to be). Make sure the zigzags are close enough together to catch every knit stitch. Then cut the knit fabric so that the zigzag is still attached to the piece you will seam. I would then use a Kitchener stitch to sew the seams. It's a bit of work, but I think it would give you the best result. It would be a shame to take your beautiful sweater and fix it, only to never wear it again because it doesn't look right anymore. And, after all your hard work knitting the sweater, make VERY sure you have it right before you cut. Good luck.

Donna - No. I was not thinking of using the sewing machine. All I thought was that I would take it in on each side by way of using a needle with yarn in it . I don't know what a kitchener stitch is, but I have used the yarn and making a stitch going forward and going back sort of like a catch stitch but using it in a straight line. Hard to describe but taking it up about an inch on each side seam. I shudder to think of cutting it. Thanks for answering. Barb
