I like knitting/crocheting sweaters but they are inevitably too heavy. It just doesn't get very cold where I live. Does anyone have advice on needles and yarn or a pattern for a light weight sweater?

I knit lots of sweaters from a book called THE SWEATER WORKSHOP....with it you decide the heft of the wool you want to use, and the size needles...knit a swatch, and then, using the simple formula page, come up with your own # to cast on, etc...this way you can make very bulky sweaters and very thin yarn ones....your choice.

Try using cotton yarns.
