I can't picture how you would do such a thing. As you said, the flannel isn't going to stretch at all, so you would have to make that part large, which would add bulk to the mittens and I think they would be uncomfortable. Is there such a thing as stretch fleece? If so, that would be my choice.

Have you thought about thrumming the mittens? That would be a better choice, in my opinion.

Very interesting, Donna. Thanks! I think I will try that on my next pair. Haven't found a local source for unspun wool. Right now, I am still trying to get used to the double pointed needles. Ripped out what I had (abt 10") and started over bc it looked too small. This will keep me busy.

Saw some lined mittens in several stores. The lining starts after the ribbing, which makes sense. Just thought I'd share in case someone else wants to do it.
