Question about Knitting in the Round/Joining

I tried to make a knitted hat. It was knitted in the round on circular needles. Somehow I joined the first row upside down and it was coming out awful, so bad I hsd to quit that project. I'd like to try again, because there's a charity that collects hand-knit caps for Cancer Patients. I'd love to be able to make some. Can someone either give me a good written description of how to join or post a link to good visual directions?

Make sure you stitches are not twisted before joining.

You may want to knit back and forth for a couple of rows before you join - the small gap this creates at the beginning is easily closed when you weave in your yarn end. It makes it simpler to join without twisting.

I learned from knitting on four needles that you must knit that firt "joining" stitch in the back of the stitch to prevent any space between the two where you join.
