Increasing Stitches Evenly Over the Rows

Thank you in advance to anyone with advice on the following. . . I am knitting a top down, toddler size cardigan. I'm having trouble knowing exactly where to put my increases. For example, I have 43 stitches on the needle and will need to increase those stitches to 54 evenly across the row. (I will be going from 54 to 82 next.) I know not to use my first stitches on either side of the fronts for the increase. Is there a formula, some system, which I can apply for each time I have to increase stitches evenly which allows me to know which stitch I'm going to "knit into the front and back" for my increase?
