Try a granny square afghan. There are many things you can make with granny squares.

Try googling the yarn companies. They have free patterns and they are usually marked--beginner--etc. Here's the link to Bernat's website

Yes, the yarn companies have great online free patterns. It is hard to know what to suggest since we don't know what you might have a use for. Babies in the family? Crochet a baby afghan or booties. Or crochet an afghan for the couch to read or watch tv on a cold night and stay cozy. Look up some crochet Christmas ornament patterns too.

You are ready to branch out and try following a pattern.

I am a beginner crocheter also. I've done a gazillion dishcloths! LOL This blanket was my first "big" project. I haven't done any crochet over summer and am looking forward to starting in again this fall/winter. I just hope I haven't forgotten anything! LOL
All the patterns at this site are free. You might have to join as a member to get the pattern, but its no big deal.

Here is a link that might be useful: Stripes blanket
