Help reading a pattern...

If a pattern instructs me to "work 3 rows even" does that mean that I should knit three rows, or continue in stockinette if that was the stitch I had previously been working?

Work 3 rows even means do not increase or decrease.
If you were doing garter stitch (knit every row) then
do 3 more rows. If you were doing stockinette stitch
Knit 1 row, purl 1 row then continue for 3 more rows or
whatever pattern stitch you were using.
Hope this helps.
