Joanne Hinmon, who designed the first pattern, used to sell a few patterns as well. Elann.com used to sell them, but I
don't see them on the website anymore, so perhaps they are sold out. Might be worth an email.

She also wrote a book called "Knitting Scottish Kilt Hose and Hiking Socks," but I don't know if it's available either. Try your library perhaps?

Thanks for the web sites but it is NOT for kilts, the pattern(s) I am searching for is for the argyle socks that the highland dancers wear.
I have numerous patterns for the kilt hose, or socks worn by the pipers.
It is the dancers who have them specially made to match their kilts, who wear them with their kilts and they are the argyle pattern in various colours.

Have you found a pattern yet? I think you could use any sock pattern and I have many...lengthen the calf and just knit the argyle pattern to match the kilt. You would have to plot it out on knitters paper. I think it would work. I am going to try some on my next project. jac333

Anyone who obtains a knitting pattern for tartan kilt socks will need the correct yarn, and from experience I know how difficult this can be. I bought some which is 100% merino wool, and there are loads of different colours which match the tartans. I suppose you could use it for plain kilt socks too if you wanted a colour instead of the boring white/cream.

I'm new to this forum and don't want to fall foul of any advertising rules, so even though I'm just a customer and not connected to them, I'm not sure if I can put their website on here (maybe someone could let me know if this would be OK). Nosing around a bit, I found this site that sells custom knit argyle socks to match your tartan. Oof. 65 pounds - I can see why you would want to knit your own. But then they discuss how they come up with a pattern to match any tartan, and you can see why it is so pricey. (and hard to replicate on your own)

But, I know a lot of dancers wear bright tartans that are only one or two colors to compete in rather than their family tartans.

If that is what you are looking for, you could probably modify most any argyle pattern you like to the length and circumfrence you would need for dancing. (My grandmother competed in Scottish dancing - none of the rest of us has any grace for it - but her tiny tiny ankles and strong calves would have definitely required sock shaping beyond a basic tube and beyond my knitting abilities)

I got a kit from HighlandXpress.com. B. Klien is very helpful. The instructions are great and if you can knit in a pattern with several colors such as argyles in a Stockinette stich you are in business. I started a pair for my grand daughter when she was in dance and have since unknit them and am in the process of knitting them to fit me as I have started Dance. The instructions have charts for 3 or 4 sizes and all the yarn. You will have to provide the knitting needles and yarn bobbins. Debi
