| Actually this is a spinoff of the What Age to Teach Knitting thread. A friend and I are teaching knitting to some kids at the local Boys and Girls club. We set the age limit at 9 for signups, but somehow a 7 year old sneaked in and we couldn't turn her down. She is doing amazingly well, although her attention span is only about 30 minutes and then she is done. We have several 10 and 11 year olds who really caught on quickly. We started with a few rows already knitted, because casting on can be the hardest part of knitting. It amazed me that we only had to show them a couple of times how to do the stitch and they got it. Although several of them ran into problems on the "homework", they all remembered how to do the knit stitch a week later.
I learned to knit at age 46. I wish I had learned at age 10! If you get the chance to share your skills and experience with young people, you will pass the art to a new generation and give a kid a reason to feel good about her/himself. |

| Kudos to you and your friend. The kids you are teaching will always remember your kindness. I bet you will have new kids showing up wanting to learn next class. |

| My friend and I taught a class of teen moms how to crochet. It was challenging for them, but they liked it. We made a baby afghan. |

| What a great idea -- sharing something that can last a lifetime, give them something to share with others, a positive use for their time... I love it. That's so great that you're doing that. Maybe when I get a bit further along I'll be able to do something like that. Thanks for the inspiration! |
