diagonal stripes

I want to knit a square using stockinette stitch with 2 colors starting with 3 stitches and increasing to the desired size and then decreasing. This will make diagonal stripes. Do I increase the first and last stitch every other row? I saw this once using a garter stitch but it doesn't come out as a square with the stockinette stitch.

RE: diagonal stripes

Mind you, I've never done this with stockinette stitch, but with garter stitch I've done it where you increase in the first stitch of every row (not both ends), and it come out nice and square. You might try that.
