crocheting the edge of a knit sweater

I finally finished my first sweater and the instructions say to single crochet around all the edges. Not being a crocheter (except for chain stitch) I tried it on my swatch. It looks fine, but it's so much less stretchy than the knitting! I tried a larger hook and it's a little better, but not much.

Is it going to be a problem - stretchy sweater, rigid edges? Is crochet always like that?

Just as it was when you learned to knit, it will take some time to get comfortable. And, as you do, you will loosen up. Also, just as in knitting, some stitches are stretchier than others.
