patterns for toddler size vests

Tried making a vest for 13 month old grandson in sport yarn. It is a V neck, and you make the ribbing that borders the neck separate by casting on 90 stitches and knitting a rib for about 5 rows. Then you put the ribbing on a stitch holder and sew it onto the V neck, attaching the live stitches to the edge of the V neck, stitch for stitch. The problem is that the sewing itself does not have the stretchiness of knitting, so it is a tight fit over the baby's head. Looking for a better pattern for some quick vests. It is cold at their house, and the floors are wood, so he gets chilled easily, especially in the mornings. Since they are pull overs, these vests will stay on him better than the cardigans I have made.
