Self striping yarn

I am an experienced knitter, but very little experience with self-striping yarns. Last year I purchased some beautiful Noro yarn and have been looking for the right pattern, which I just found. The sweater is done in a front and back, sewn together. Obviously, because it isn't done in the round, the color bands don't match up at the sides. Is this acceptable, or do you have to knit sweaters in the round when using this yarn? Also, if I purchase Noro pattern books, are their patterns done in the round to avoid this? I'm not liking the look so far and may take the entire thing apart.
