A knitted rug: or am i insane

For years my wife has been saving old jeans in our basement:

now there is a big pile pile of them. The original idea was that these jeans would be cut into strips and sent off to become a great runner of a rag rug to end all runners__ she wanted the upstairs hall--10' and the stairs (2 turns, 2 landings, and about 18') all as one rug. all woven by someone who she has lost contact with. so i notcied there was a small KNITTED rug in a craft book (like 2'x4') that i was flipping thru. Her idea is now that i could knit a rug

for the halls and steps-- like i really want to deal with something 30"x30feet. However, i'd be willing to do a 30"x10' runner for the upstairs hall. I found a nice pattern with a raised diagonal rib that knits up fast and

looks great. I'll be knitting on #19's or larger.

so how do i prep the jeans to knit.

other than cutting them into strips, stitching the strips together and making a huge ball?
