slip first stitch of every row as if to purl.
You slip THE FIRST STITCH ONLY. You put needle into stitch
as to purl it but don't, just slip stitch to other needle.

Just as jjknitter says above, "The first stitch only". Not both ends. It will give you a nice edge.

What this does is set up a neat edge to sew together. If for some reason you forget about the slip at the beginning on a few rows - Do Not Rip Out. It changes nothing in the overall pattern. That is strictly for finishing more neatly. If you're adept at sewing, it won't be an issue for you at all.
