I use the free one for a hat at lionbrand.com. The tight fitting cap is k2, p2, as I recall. It can be made for all types of yarn and for all sizes of heads from baby through men's.

I crochet and have used this pattern - Gotcha Covered Hats from Coats & Clark for a few years now. You can vary the yarn and size by following the charts. Also comes in knit version

I've used this one (knit) and adjusted it to my guage once. It was fast, easy and worked out wonderfully. I'm in the process of making another one for my brother's girlfriend.

"Julia Roberts" Hat

This pattern that I designed resembles the hat worn by Julia Roberts in the movie Stepmom. This hat should fit snugly.

Finished Size:
S/M (21 - 22")
M/L (22 - 23")

Yarn:
Lamb's Pride Bulky (85% wool/15% mohair) 125 yards/skein
Main Color 4 oz #97 - Rust
Color A small amount #14 - Sunburst Gold
Color B small amount #79 - Blueboy
Color C small amount #62 - Amethyst

Buying one full skein of each will result in four hats with different main colors.

Needles:
Size 10.5 circular needles 16" long (or use double points for the whole cap)
Size 10.5 double point needles
Or size needed to obtain gauge!

Gauge:
3.5 sts and 4 rows per inch in circular knitting on 10.5 needles
Very important to assure proper fit!

Instructions:
With main color and size 10.5 circular needles cast on 70 (76) sts. Join and knit 6 rows (1.5 inches).
Purl one row (to stop rolling of brim)
Knit 6 more rows of main color (1.5 inches).
Attach color A and knit one row, then purl one row. Do not break yarn.
Attach color B and knit one row. Break yarn.
With color A knit one row and purl one row.
With main color knit 4 rows (1 inch).
Attach color C and knit one row, then purl one row. Break yarn.
With main color knit 3 rows (¾ inch).
Attach color B and knit one row, then purl one row. Do not break yarn.
Attach color C and knit one row. Break yarn.
With color B knit one row, then purl one row.

Start Decreasing For Crown:
With Main color, knit decreasing 6 (4) sts evenly spaced. 64 (72) sts.
Knit one round with Main color.
With color A knit one round, and purl one round.

Size M/L only (Skip these rounds for size S/M):
With Main color k7, k2tog around.
Knit 1 round even.

For Both Sizes:
K6, k2tog around (56 sts).
Knit 1 round even.
K5, k2tog around (48 sts).
Knit 1 round even.

Change to dpn on next round.

K4, k2tog around (40 sts).
Knit 1 round even.
K3, k2tog around (32 sts).
K2, k2tog around (24 sts).
K1, k2tog around (16 sts).
K2tog around (8 sts).

Leaving a 8" tail, break yarn and draw through remaining 8 sts. Weave in ends.

This pattern is a good pattern to use up scraps you have, or buy an extra skein of yarn on your next sweater to make a matching cap.

Thank you for the pattern! I havce several part balls of yarn that would be a nice addition for a hat - to add some colour.

One question about when you wrote about decreasing for the crown: "Size M/L only (Skip these rounds for size S/M):"
Which is it - include or skip - for the medium size?

Jane, there are two sizes: S/M (small to medium) and M/L (medium to large).

If making size Medium/Large then include the two rounds.

If making size Small/Medium then don't do, skip.

I made this hat last night and couldn't believe it worked up so quickly. We are making hats at the college for Caps for Kids so I was told any size from infant to teen would be good. Wanted something more current and this fit the bill. Used the Red Heart Monet but I think I'll make a few more in different colors/sizes - perhaps use up some of those scraps and make it striped.

I'm still too new at knitting for anything to be "tried and true," but I designed this cabled/ribbed hat to go with a fingerless gloves pattern I liked.

Oops, it is the Gotcha hat that Susan posted that I make all the time. Sometimes I use it as a guide for size and make the body of the hat in a pattern from a layette I am making. These hats are more popular with young moms today than the old fashioned bonnets with strings to tie under the chin.
