plain knit scarf

I am knitting a scarf--just plain knit stitch, no purl. I thought the yarn looked pretty--multi colored, purplish and blue. I made a mistake because it splits and I have had quite a time. I have to back and forth making corrections. My problem is, when picking up a dropped stitch or making any changes, it ends up looking like a knit and pearl stitch. I don't know whether I am making myself clear, but what is the correct way to make corrections? I have ripped a lot and because of the type of yarn--I won't get this kind again no matter how pretty. Thanks Barb
