This evening, we had a neighborhood potluck dinner at our next door neighbor's house. After dinner, a couple of people suggested that we go caroling in the neighborhood even though almost none of us are experienced singers. Some bowed out, and we ended up with 7 carolers, with another woman joining in when we arrived to sing at her house. It turned out to be a lovely experience, with people being very delighted and appreciative of our music. One woman was moved to tears. We enjoyed it so much that we plan to repeat it next year.

Has anyone else had the experience of caroling?

Brings back memories of childood and as an adult. Really puts the spirit of Christmas in perspective. So meaningful for everyone.

Yes, I feel all sung out at the moment. :-)

Saturday morning I was part of a small "flash mob" at an indoor farm market. There were about 20 of us. We started out in various parts of the room, and then two by two we started singing "O Come All Ye Faithful." At first we thought we'd start one by one, but the place was noisy. We then gathered on and in front of a stage in the corner. Here's a picture, although it doesn't show all the singers.

That night I went to an annual party where we always sing carols around the piano. Then this evening I attended another annual party with singing. It was especially fun this time because one of the guests was a young opera singer living in Vienna, and she led the carols. We did it all a capella, and it seemed as though everyone at the party joined in. Some wonderful harmonies!

I love the idea of what you did, Stacey--caroling through the neighborhood. But I don't tolerate cold well enough to do that myself.

I wouldn't reduce the salt. It's leaching out juices (and potential bitterness). However, you could rinse the slices then drain once the brining period has elapsed. I don't think you're going to find the pickles are salty in flavor but if you have dietary concerns about sodium level, that would be a good way to reduce it. As you can see, the recipe I posted, with approximately 18 cups of product yields 7 pints. The recipe you posted has about 50% more than that (more onions and the green pepper) so I'd guess you'd end up with about a dozen pints, give or take. One concern I have with the recipe you posted is that it has more veggies but the same amount of syrup as the one I posted. If I were making it, I'd double the syrup. I keep thinking as written it has the potential to tend to the dense and drier end. I hope this helps. Carol

Jeez, Deanna, I read that header and thought, "Am I in trouble again?" I felt like the kid heading to the principal's office. The recipe is my all-time favorite shortbread (and I am, unfortunately for my figure, a shortbread connaisseur). It's very delicate and crumbly, not a whole lot like you might think shortbread might be, but it is a great great cookie. Well, enough accolades. Don't want to keep you in suspense. This comes from Alice Medrich's book, "Cookies and Brownies." It's out of print, unfortunately. Note the absolutely absurd used price on Amazon. As if. She did a lot of experiments for the ultimate cookie in each category and discovered bleached flour does make a difference with some types. This is one of them. You decide. I know most people don't go the bleached flour route, but I buy it specifically for a few of these recipes. Nut Shortbread Categories : Desserts Â Cookies Entertaining and Holiday Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour -- (bleached preferred) 1/2 cup nuts -- (pieces - toasted) 12 tablespoons unsalted butter 6 tablespoons sugar pinch salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoons sugar -- (for sprinkling on top) Pulse flour and nuts together in food processor until finely ground. In saucepan melt butter. Add sugar, salt and vanilla. Stir in flour/nut mixture. 9-inch round or 8-inch square pan or 9 1/2-inch fluted tart pan, greased or lined with foil. (Not necessary with stone pans.) Pat shortbread in pan. Refrigerate at least two hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 300Â°. Place rack in bottom third of oven. Bake shortbread 65-75 minutes. (A few minutes less for tart pan.) Sprinkle with sugar. Remove from pan and cut into pieces while still warm. Cool thoroughly. Keeps well in a tight tin or can be frozen. sushipup, thank you. I love the music out of King's College! Last week we had a Lessons and Carols concert from our cathedral in Sacramento. I've done many audio virtual choirs before but this was the first with video. Eeeek. Good thing my square was very small.

Yesterday a group of riders from my wife's barn decorated their horses, and went Christmas Caroling on horseback. They go down a long gravel road, stopping a few places along the way, and end at this house, where the owners come out with cookies and spiked apple cider, and carrots for the horses.

Love it! Esp. the photo of the smaller horse with the child on top -- the horse's front legs look funny a bit splayed, almost like a newborn's! And of course the dog's photo is wonderful. I can't help but love a dog in a coat!

The winter-coat grooming look is something I've not seen before; it's very interesting.
