More GOOD bews for Grandson!

I posted on Dec.6 that my grandson was accepted at Dartmoutt and today he got more good news! He learned today that he has gotten a full 4 ear scholarship. That's $60,000 a year that covers tuition & fees, room and board, transportation, and I'm not sure about books. I was so excited and in awe and grateful and proud of him. He has always been a really smart kid!

We were just getting ready to leave for Costco when he called and told us the news. I wanted to just run up to people and hug then and tell them the good news! "Attention shoppers, There is a crazy lady running around the store hugging people and babbling about her grandson." LOL

oK, I have to quit typing now because I keep making mistakes. Over excited maybe?

My oldest child, a boy, had autism spectrum disorder. it began to manifest itself at age 18 months and was diagnosed at age 3. Therapists at that time did not trust early age diagnosis because of other diseases masquerading as autism. For our case, a definite diagonsis was decalred at age 3. We had a heartbreaking time of it. We could not afford proper treatment and insurance did not cover "mystery" diseases. Our kid was antisocial and clever. He exhibited two personalities: one when he was in our presence and another when he was beyond our control or knowlege. He strove to keep these two lives separated, but when the two spheres of existance happened to meet, he tried to shrink into nothing like trying to melt into the floor. For example, one time he was with us when we were standing in line at the village hall to vote. Suddently, he dropped to the floor and covered his head. We were puzzled. The problem: He had spied his school teacher in the line next to us. We had never met this treacher, but we happened to say a casual hello to each other. We had another problem with school. He was an odd-ball at school and others began to either shun or tease him. His anger was held until it spilled over the break point and he would explode on someone. Sometimes, it was not the proper object, but another child who was nearby and whom he knew he could best. The second and major problem was the attitude of school personnel. This problem was festering and they never contacted us until it had gotten out of control. One day, he split he lip of a little girl and chipped her tooth. I beleive her parents were threatening legal action against the school, and it was at this point when the school authorities first contacted us. We were hauled in to inform us our son was being thrown out of school. This was the first time the school contacted us, and it was the first time we became aware of the problem. He had just become a 1st grader and was being tossed out. Nothing was ever done about teasing. There is more to this story and parental tears, but I'll wrap it up with the outcome. We moved to a different school system and when he came to live with us again, he entered his freshman year in high school. At graduation, he won the "most improved" student. He's now 45 years old, living away from home, and managing to hold a job to earn barely enough to pay his rent and food. He still has a couple of personal demons to resist, but these affect only him. One demon he has defeated. We are proud of his progress. It is much more than the progonosis of his childhood. It has taken much support tempered with iron will from his parents. On thing I will say is never give up, and do not accept inappropriate behavior. Do not respond to inappropriate behavior, but always be alert and always respond positivetly to appropriate behavior. Woohoo! That is great news Bebe! I sure hope it takes care of his symptoms. I'm so nervous every time I give my kids any kind of immunizations. All the side effects scare me almost as much as the disease they are supposed to help with. We haven't gotten our flu shots yet this year even though we are supposed to get them every year with DD and DH having asthma. Wasn't planning on getting the H1N1 cause I had read a bunch of side effects it could cause and that is wasn't fully tested to know what else it could do. Always something. Danged if ya do and danged if ya don't. ha Super glad you did your research. Go G-ma Bebe!! ha Keep us updated on him!

Instead of calling CPS, why not buy your friend a really good parenting book, that addresses some of the issues they have. Yes, it sounds as though your friend resents the child and probably the stepson moving in with her. But perhaps you could go to lunch with her and talk to her about how hard it must be for this boy to lose his mother, and the changes this child must be facing. See, through your friendship with this woman, if you can help her to feel compassion for this child. Tell her that you understand how hard this must be for her, and yet can she find it within herself to have compassion for a little boy who must be confused, hurting, and anxious. Encourage her to feed him what he is used to eating, and to slowly introduce new foods, and to give him a "child's" chewable vitamin for nutrition. The boys dad should take a parenting class for single fathers so that he has someone to ask questions from. Perhaps the YMCA has something. But I would think it is your friendship with the family that could help this little boy. Perhaps you could go shopping with your friend, and help her pick up a few toys and books for the child. If money is an issue, go to garage sales, and children's resale shops. See, through your positive encouragement, if you can help her to see this as a sweet blessing, instead of something to resent and be cross about.

That is so awesome! This is definetly the fun part of being a grandparent. I'd just want to high five everyone at costco! What an amazing accomplishment.

awesome for him!!! congrats!!! where you go to school, your perfect GPA and what you study is all that matters in this economy...believe me!

BUT there is ABSOLUTELY no way books are going to only be $1800. LOL...my DH just finished in May an honors BS & MS in Mechanical Engineering and had individual books more than $800 each...books alone in mech engineering ran $4000-5000 a yr. we used asian printers to get them for a few hundred less but you do not get your books till a week or two into the semester, sometimes the correct editions couldn't be printed. it is ALL worth it thou, as long as you are in fields involving math, physics, engineering or chemistry. ~ liz

Great, now he can enjoy the college experience without worrying about how to pay for classes each term. I paid out of pocket for my undergraduate degree and never enjoyed the college experience because I was always balancing work and school- but I also graduated without school debt so that was my reward.

I received tuition remission for my MPH and PhD programs. Even though I also worked, not having to worry about tuition may those years SOOOOOO much more fun!

Wanda, I can just see you running around Costco hugging--because I'd want to do the same thing. That is an incredible scholarship and he must have worked very hard to achieve it at his young age. Proud? Darned straight you should be, and he should be, too.

Guess we don't have to wish YOU a Merry Christmas. Santa came early and he was very generous!!

Was it an outside scholarship? I didn't think the Ivy League gave scholarships. Either way, it's awesome. I think a lot of people don't even bother applying to the $60k a year schools but the fact is they have a ton of financial resources. I went to a top 10 college and ended up getting my degree for $15k, which is significantly less than people I know who went to cheaper schools.

Anyway congrats to him! That is a great feeling. Student loan debt can be crippling.

I was never once asked my GPA after I graduated, but I will say that internships are the most important thing! Especially if he isn't going to need to work! I didn't realize how important they were until my last year of college. Also, some of the people I know who studied things they were interested in (psychology, medieval literature, etc) versus that which will land a high paying job are really struggling now. I picked Economics for the flexibility of going into statistics, data mining, investment banking, consulting or general analytical roles and it's worked very well for me.

Ideally people would be able to study whatever they want and still land a job they love but that's not the reality today. Sometimes it happens but usually it doesn't. I'm only saying this because it's hard to know that at 18 and I wish someone had told me!

Dorothy -- You have a one-in-a-million grandson! I've only known two kids who got 'full ride' scholarships to a top school: The extremely intelligent and diligent son and daughter of dear friends went to Stanford for engineering degrees. (Of course they never returned to the cold Midwest!)

Does your DGS have a major chosen? Will he be coming from balmy Hawaii to freezing New England?
