Are you watching Peter Pan?

It probably hasn't started in other time zones. I am enjoying it so much and it reminds me of being a little girl and watching the Mary Martin version.

Amazing that it is live!

Before I even opened your thread dedtired I was thinking about being a little girl in the 50's and watching Mary Martin...after that I wasn't really interested in the story anymore.

I think it depends on what region of Germany you live in. In my area, we had "Knecht Ruprecht" who would put coal in your stocking if you were bad. But there was no registry of good or bad children. And yes, December 6th is St. Nikolaus day where boots are filled with nuts and chocolate and oranges and other goodies. :o)

What ever is eating it is welcome to it and the rest of them as well. We have several pecan trees in our yard, this used to be a pecan plantation. So normally we would have lots of squirrels gathering up pecans and feasting on them. But I have not seen any at all since the hawks moved in. Hubby has been filling his pockets with pecans every time he walks to the mailbox. He has filled a big plastic storage bin. Plus I gave away quite a bit of his collection to a friend. I need to get a pecan cracker and crack while watching TV. They are selling for $5 lb whole uncracked.

Lars, the NYT recipe (below, since it is behind a firewall IIRC) was the only recipe I found with many reviews and a high rating. I liked it because it is not something you see people make all the time and so it is special, it looks pretty, but has flavors with a wide appeal. Not particularly hard at all, just need time to chill the custard. I'd give it a thumbs up, but again, DOUBLE the custard (even as I was making it, I said to DH, "it is no harder to make a batch of this than to make 2 or 3 batches"...wish I would have). And i did beat the eggs/sugar longer than the recipe called for, but someone in comments said 10min and next time I'd do that. I baked mine in a springform pan lined w parchment. Boston Cream Pie FOR THE CUSTARD: note: consider doubling this 3 large egg yolks ½ cup/100 grams granulated sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch Pinch kosher salt 1 cup/240 milliliters whole milk ¼ cup/60 milliliters heavy cream 1 tablespoon/14 grams unsalted butter 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract FOR THE CAKE: 8 tablespoons/114 grams (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for the pan 1 ¾ cups/224 grams all-purpose flour 1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder ¾ teaspoon kosher salt ¾ cup/180 milliliters whole milk 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1 cup/200 grams granulated sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract FOR THE GLAZE: ¼ cup/60 milliliters heavy cream 4 ounces/113 grams semisweet chocolate chips 1 teaspoon neutral oil, such as safflower Pinch kosher salt Add to Your Grocery List PREPARATION Make the custard: In a medium saucepan, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until well combined. Whisk in cornstarch and salt. In a slow, steady stream, whisk in milk and then the cream. Add butter. Cook mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, just until it starts to thicken. Immediately whisk mixture until smooth, then continue to cook and stir custard until it has come to a very low boil for 2 minutes, about 6 to 8 minutes total. Strain custard through a fine mesh sieve into a small bowl, pushing it through with a small spatula. Stir in vanilla. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing the plastic directly onto the surface. Chill for at least 3 hours and up to 24 hours. Prepare the cake: Heat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-2-inch round baking pan, generously greasing the sides, and line it with parchment paper. Butter parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. In a small saucepan, bring the milk and butter to a simmer over medium heat. When the butter is melted, remove pan from heat. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar with an electric mixer until pale and thick, about 4 to 6 minutes (note; consider doing this for 10 minutes). With the mixer running on low, add the milk mixture and beat until combined. Then add flour mixture and vanilla and beat until combined. Transfer batter to the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool 10 minutes. With a very thin knife, cut around the edge to release the cake from the side of the pan. Carefully flip the cake onto the rack, then turn it right-side-up to cool completely. Assemble the cake: Using a serrated knife, carefully cut the cake into two layers and place the bottom layer on a serving plate. Stir custard, and spread it onto the cut side of the bottom half. Replace the top half of the cake, cut side down. Prepare the glaze: In a small saucepan over medium-low, heat the cream to a simmer. Remove the pot from the heat and pour cream over the chocolate chips, oil, salt and let stand for 3 minutes. Whisk until smooth. Spread the glaze evenly over the top of the cake. PS We are on day 3 of Risk (albeit with many long breaks in the action). Still losing. Worse. Send reinforcements. Or pie.

I also had tried Schitt's Creek and hated it--I'm old enough that I thought it was a cheesy remake of Green Acres. And Chris Elliott is unwatchable, which actually didn't get any better through the entire run of the show IMO. It wasn't funny, it wasn't clever and the characters were all such jerks. Who could love that show?! But soooooo many people kept saying they did love it that I decided to grit my way through the first season then say enough and quit. By the 5th episode I was laughing. And by the end of the first season I was hooked. I think it also helped that I watched it during the spring 2020 COVID nightmare. To be able to go spend time in that warm, funny, accepting little world was such a balm to my soul. As for other faves, I also am loving Only Murders in the Building mostly for the acting of the 3 leads. I watched The Chair which was entertaining but pretty formulaic. I never miss What we Do in the Shadows. It's like The Office but with vampires...absolutely hilarious. Waiting eagerly for Succession to drop next week!

I'm watching and have been enjoying it! Allison Williams performance should put the naysayers to shame.....she's just great.

There's not been a sour note or a glaring misstep at all, that I've noticed.

Yes! Loving it and enjoying Allison Williams. (And I am a Mary Martin junkie.)

And I LOVE Christopher Walken! OMG.

Well, that was just so charming, even if I did know the ending.

I remember wanting to be able to fly so much after watching it back in the '50's. My dad flew me all around my bedroom. Such great memories. Nice that a whole new generation can enjoy the story too.

As a child I truly believed in Peter Pan. I still remember the day I was walking home from school with another second grader and for some reason she stole my fairy dust. I was devastated and cried all the way home. I don't remember how I found out about Santa but I'll never forget Linda Martin stealing my fairy dust.

I watched last night and thought the cast did a fantastic job. But for some reason I found it just a little boring. I think it's because it couldn't recreate the magic I experienced as a child watching Mary Martin. Allison Williams was enjoyable but lacked that boyish, mischievous quality that Mary Martin so easily conveyed. And in all fairness it's impossible to compare this performance with something I saw so many years ago and which has been magnified with the magic of childhood memories.

I agree that Williams did not have Mary Martin,s spark. She was a bit cautious but still did a great job. I am glad that agirl traditionally plus the role of Peter because the story is really rather sexist. Wendy goes to be the lost boys mother, sing lullabys and sew pockets on their clothes. All the boys get to be free wheeling and adventurous. At least Tiger Lily is a strong woman. Even at the end, Wendy's daughter goes off with Peter "just for spring cleaning".

Nevertheless, it is a sweet story.

I will try to see this version Saturday, and then find a DVD of the Mary Martin version.

Hubby and I watched it and both enjoyed it. I was about 8 when the Mary Martin version was on TV, so it was all nostalgia for me. My husband is a big fan of Christopher Walken. As a kid , hubby lived near the Walken family and remembers The Walken bakery in Queens NY. Chris had a brother Glen who looked just like him, maybe a twin. Anyhow, I loved the songs and the flying. I shed a tear when Tinkerbell was dying. I thought it was first-rate.

I watched the beginning, but lost interest. I'm in the minority; I've never been a big Peter Pan fan. At least not in adulthood.

But I'm glad the show went well. I like Brian Williams. ;-)

Couldn't watch it....did not want to tarnish my memories of the great Mary Martin version. Same with Sound of Music last year.....some things are just sacred!

Interesting and mostly favorable review of Peter Pan from Slate, below. I thin they make some interesting points.

I forgot about the Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood. Maybe because it WAS forgettable. Underwood was just awful as Maria, although in general I like her.

I think I knew that Allison is Brian's daughter. Thanks for the reminder. Has anyone seen an interview with him today? I am sure he does not want to steal his daughter's thunder. Wonder if he will mention it on the news tonight. He must be busting his buttons with pride.

Seeing it from the eyes of an adult, does make a difference. We watched with some of our great grands, and seeing how they were so mesmerized by it, was the best part. I'm sure we watched our Mary Martin version, with the same intensity. With graphics and entertainment in general being so superior, I think kids could be a much more difficult audience to reach. I will be purchasing the dvd when it is released, because I know this will be part of our grandparents entertainment package.
