Local commercials are SOOOO awful

You all have them....locally produced TV ads for a wide variety of businesses.

Here, local car commercials are more numerous than those for jewelry stores....but the furniture stores are the WORST!

Any of these places are likely to think that their children (who can't read the cue cards) are wonderful little actors capable of performing a skit, or that their teenage daughters make great models, or that the local varsity cheerleading squad sells cars, or that their dogs, cats, horses, and other pets make good spokes persons.

One of the owners of a jewelry store always has a fully dressed clown...as in a red nose, white face makeup in his commercials, acting like an idiot.

Don't get me started on the local political commercials. Some of them are disgraceful.

That this is on my mind right now is that " 'tis the season " for lots and lots of local commercials.

I think that every time I see one. In a 30-minute t.v. show, there are 8 1/2 minutes of commercials - ridiculous, imho!!!

I'm back...I made the plain yogurt cake on The Kitchn blog...made it exactly as she said and only added the grated rind of a lemon. Baked it 50 min. Used EEVO as that is all I had...not just plain OO. It was WONDERFUL. LIght and tasty and no oily taste at all. We had it last night and again this AM with sliced strawberries. I will be making it often. I will link to a piece on Livestrong about palm oil . And here is part of an article about coconut oil : "According to Dr. Barry Sears, who is an expert in lipids (fats), holds a doctorate in biochemistry and does extensive research in the field, coconut oil does have some advantages over other types of saturated fat in that it is rich in tocotrienols (vitamin E, an antioxidant), and because of the high amounts of saturated fat, it is stable for cooking. (Note that the tocotrienols degrade during cooking so this benefit is lost if you use coconut oil for cooking.) All in all, coconut oil may not be as unhealthy as many animal-derived saturated fats (butter, meat), but until more research is done, especially looking at the impact on heart disease risk, it is better to limit your intake to less than 10% of total calories per day and make sure that it replaces less healthy foods such as refined carbohydrates, sugar and high fat animal proteins instead of adding to them. And I agree with Sears that for controlling inflammation and obtaining optimal health, extra virgin olive oil is unquestionably your best choice." Certainly a lot of info. The bottom line is , if you take in too many calories vs how many you burn you will gain weight and potentially be unhealthy. Moderation in ALL things is best. You can't leave out any food group without suffering consequences. If you leave out meat you have to make up the difference with the proper amino acids in complementary proteins. Love to see all these beautiful homes! Our family room is where we spend all our free time. In the moments that I'm not running around the house or chasing the small person seen in the picture, I am watching HGTV or using my laptop while sprawled on the couch. WHIMSEY! Yes Lavon, that is exactly the description for how I view Halloween. I have never viewed it as evil, or bloody ghoulish, although I know some do. But not for me. To me it is whimsical, and reminds me of the 50's when I was growing up. The excitment of choosing a costume, the anticipation of being out at night to visit all neighborhood grownups, stopping on the sidewalk with friends to compare who was giving out the best treats, the houses all decorated and being scared out of my wits when someone answered the door dressed as Frankenstein, and the anticipation of coming home to sift through the treats deciding which to eat, and which to savor for another day. Halloween for me is a memory of happier, innocent times, a smell of MacIntosh apples and that sweet yellow and orange candy corn, carving pumpkins, running through the fall leaves on the ground, the crisp evenings with winter and Christmas just a breath away. Wonderful childhood memories I still relive when I set out my decorations. I guess Halloween evokes different feelings to different people. To me it was always magical.

I am going to get on my design high horse and probably offend some people who personalize discussions about design theory, because I am good at annoying people in this way. First, I think almost anybody who buys a post war house in almost any part of the country that was not built as a completely custom house is probably going to end up with a lot of choices in houses that include a patch of brick or stone on the front facade and plain siding or plainer brick on the rest. Almost anybody who builds a new house in a development or subdivision or home owner's association is not only going to face the same, thing, but in addition are not going to be allowed to leave the stone or brick accent off even if they want to. The element that was originally used as a budget cutting device is now "important" to the design and consistency of the entire development. The consistency of materials of the individual house is no longer important, but the inconsistency of materials and how they are used must be consistent throughout the neighborhood. The building a house forum is full of questions about how to tack the stone or brick onto the front of their houses even if they don't want it because the guidelines say the house must be 10% stone and 30% brick on the facade. Second, I don't think there is anything the matter with vinyl siding. I don't think there is anything the matter with any particular building material. Frank Lloyd Wright built beautiful houses out of concrete block. There's nothing the matter with building a plain rectangular house with plain modest materials that go all away around the house and calling it done. But as a culture we have been convinced that this is cheap looking somehow. But if its three sides of a rectangle with a convoluted elevation on the front including three or four different building materials, it's "pretty". Third, if you are building a custom or semi custom house, why not build something that you can afford to finish the same on all four sides? We are also in a culture where people are pressured into feeling it's necessary to take everything to a level that we can just barely afford it. And who is that impressing? Some random stranger may be impressed by your house driving by, but what about the people who get inside, and see that there's barely any furniture, and many of the rooms are cheaply detailed drywall boxes. I understand if you live in a HCOLA that it is easy to be house poor, but whats the point of a 4000 square foot house when you are entertaining people on card tables. Sheer volume isn't everything. Should you apologize to friends because the back of your house is vinyl? I dunno, but think about where you are putting friends and family. There is this fancy facade out front that no one ever spends any time in front of. They are escorted to the back yard. There are $1M townhouses here that have stone and brick facades with genuine copper bays and details on the front. The end unit has plain stucco on the side that faces a side streets. The backs are vinyl siding (you can easily see all three materials together.) So some stranger sees the fancy front of the house where the real friends are taken out back where they sit on crudely built pressure treated decks next to vinyl siding with all sorts of PVC pipes and vents and such sticking out all over with no concerns about esthetics, or quality, and it's all right at eye level. As a culture, maybe we should apologize.

The local commercials that feature singing are among the worst. Same group/voices, same tune, all sounds the same whatever the ad is for. Yeah local commercials are a major pet peeve of mine, too!

I know what you mean. We have a flooring store that the commercials always features his family. They are all pretty poor actors. Almost hard to watch.

We have one here where someone's "cute" 6-7 yo daughter sits on a couch explaining how easy the product is to use, to her little dog. She uses a sing-song "I've memorised this but have no idea what it actually means so can't put the emphasis in the right places" voice, and at the end hands the product to the dog with "Now you try." It's nauseating. I change channels as soon as it comes on.

I too have some that are not good--like a music store showing a mother and daughter (older teen) trying to put a clarinet together--then some guy steps in and says --if you had only gone to -----. Come on how difficult is that.

OH I know! That's exactly the local commercials we have here, minus the clown..LOL!

What bugs me is that these people think that a child is a capable person to sell me (an adult) a product for my home or a car that costs me tens of thousands of dollars. I find it very insulting actually! I mean WTH does a 10 year old know about a Chevy Truck? What does a five year old know about a refrigerator or new windows for my home? UGH! I hate it! What's next, a 3 year old in a divorce lawyer's commercial? "Ip uw need a daborse caw my daddy". HA!

Joyful, public radio is all I lusten to.....on the radio. I'm talking about TV, which is a bit more difficult to escape.

Sushi, those identical jingles are crazy! Don't people listen to other commercials before signing the dotted line?

On the subject of using the children....there is a local used car dealership where the owner used his adorable (truly), five year old grandson as spokesperson.

I adore southern accents, but these people were SO deep country southern that the boy could not be understood at all! They eventually revised that first commercial....WITH SUBTITLES! I'm serious. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that.

They revamped the last version entirely....with the child sitting on Peepaw's knee and not saying a thing. Lol.

The only local commercial TV we watch is the news -- well, they call it 'news', but it's seldom NEW news. Most of the local 'reporting' is some lame feature story:"Look, look! It's raining!" or "See the ducks cross the road," or a press release dressed up as news to be read by the talking heads in the studio. I am certain Chicago has 30 minutes of news per day, but nobody's covering it. Thank goodness for print journalism. (And NPR.)

We have one for a local stove (heating - wood, pellet, gas) and BBQ business that leaves me embarrassed for the wife, someone I know casually. She must not realize how silly she looks or the artificial grating pitch of her voice because it's been running for a year now :)

Well, the local singing jingles aren't identical, just so much alike that you know they came out of the same shop/production group.

Anyone else get the ads with silly props? The woman wearing oversized boxing gloves because her store is "knocking out the competition" is the one that I can't stand.

Two I can't stand here. One is a buxom blonde scantily clad for... bail bonds. What? Why would I want her representing me in any way, legally?

The other, their catch phrase is, "you make the coffee, we'll bring the cup." They do replacement windows. HUH?

Don't tell us - tell them!

Well, maybe rather, "Don't *just* tell us - tell them!".

How many of you have called (or visited) the sponsor, asked to speak to the owner.manager, and told them what you've just told us?

If they don't seem very concerned, recruit some of your friends to do likewise.

Also - the broadcaster.

They need feedback, as well - negative as well as positive.

Take action were there's a possiblity of achieving some positive result, rather than just getting a load off of your chest, O.K?
