Are your stores doing good business?

I had to return a pair of shoes today. (Only my mind believed size 8 was big enough; my toes wanted a half-size larger!)

I got to the mall as the store opened at 11 a.m., did some browsing and left an hour later. NOT BUSY. I'm thinking this holiday season is not going to add up to much profit for the brick and mortar stores. This mall has Macy's, Sears, Carson's, Penney's and a ton of small shops. Only the food court seemed busy.

I live in a very small town & almost all of the small stores have been closed for a long time.

The next biggest town is 50 min. away & no malls there either.
There is a Sears, J C Penney, Lowes, WalMart & other local stores, but most of them are never that busy.

The stores I was in weren't too busy. Only one day when I went to a mall, i had difficulty finding a spot near the entrance to a mall. I did most of my shopping online or in little family owned stores. I no longer shop as a hobby.

Hi --I know what you mean. I just bought some sturdy plastic shelves about 6' high and store everything on there--The key is going through at least once a year and organizing everything. I keep small items like epsom salts, etc. in glass jars with lids and everthing else in clear plastic containers so i can see what's in it. You can find these at any big box store. The key is being able to look up at the shelves and see everything without diggin in it. I also stapled chicken wire to the ceiling of my garage out of the walkways and use this to hang stuff with S hooks I bought at the hardware store, or just bent clothes hanger wire will work. I use a lot of linen placemats and it is very vexing to want the kind that's on the bottom of the stack. No matter how careful you are, you can easily wrinkle a whole pile of them. My solution was to design a cabinet with doors that open to reveal a bank of very close together pullout shelves, so each kind is stored in its own stack and I can peel off what I need in a jiff. Below that I have several deeper (meaning the sides are higher) pullouts which are for napkins. I have some dividers on those to keep those stacks from falling over. As we only use cloth napkins, I need a lot of storage for them. HTH, Molly

Judydel, sorry for the late reply. Phone and internet were both out. I designed the paperback bookcases we have and my husband buit them. Hanging them was a joint project, then I painted them. I don't happen to have a copy of the sketch for the bookcase that I posted but, this is a very similar one in another room. They're pretty easy to build. Got the wood at HD. I think it was poplar, we wanted something that was "tighter" than pine. The bookcases have no "back", I just paint the wall the same color as the bookcase so that it looks like it has a back. They're supported by steel angle irons. There's one running continuously along the bottom that the bookcase sits on and there's another running along the top. That's it for supports. In the photo I posted the top of the bookcase is so high and the bottom way below eye level so the angle irons aren't easily visible. In the smaller bookcase sketch I'm posting we use crown molding to cover the angle irons. OH!!! And if you do build a paperback bookcase rework the clearance between shelves! Two of our paperback bookcases were built before they started putting out those slightly "higher" paperbacks and since I kept the clearance between shelves to a minimum in order to fit more shelves, those new style paperbacks won't fit vertically. I have to stack them horizontally.

Did you all see on the news about how the "Liquidation sales", really work? It looks as though the 50%- 75% etc, are the Linens and things prices. When the store turns the liquidation process over to the liquidators, they then are going by the liqidators prices, which are much higher. So, 50% off of a price, should say, which price they started at, but they don't. New price tags were stuck over old price tags. The new prices were way over the orignal, that he store owners used. I won't waste my time trying to go through things, only to pay possibly more on "sale" than it was to begin with! Buyer beware, I guess.

Despite the 3 big stores, our mall is an empty ghost town for years. Out of towners, and foreigners, love the Outlet Mall. Strange indeed, with the economy, most restaurant parking lots are full??

Went to mall, 2 days after Christmas in Minot ND and it was crowded with people buying, returning and visiting. But we have the oil boom but still stores are advertising for help, all over. Lots of Canadians here also. And we have two large resverations close by, along with a Air Base. Prices on rentals and housing dropping a bit.

Malls here, including Mall of America, always seem bustling. However I prefer to shop in the many thriving mom and pop stores on a the local streets right by my house. Stores here in the Twin Cities seem to be doing quite well, and restaurants always seem packed. I can walk from my house to 6 coffee shops and 5 bakeries. Amazing to me that they survive so well.

The mall where I went back two days after Christmas was packed. I don't think the stores will have a higher profit this year despite the ridiculously long hours.

The little I have been in the malls, I have seen really reduced prices. Now is the time to buy some necessities. Actually, someone on the radio said February would be good shopping.

I don't think the stores did as well this year. I did most of my shopping on-line. I didn't buy as much because the kids are older and the wants and needs have changed. Dh took one day off work and we hit a few stores including Wal-Mart. I'm not sure if it is the local Wal-Mart or what, but they don't carry as much as they used to. We couldn't find what we came for so we only bought a couple of items there. They had a lot of stuff that didn't look like it was moving. I hit Target a couple of times. Most of what I bought was for me. I also tried a few other stores. I honestly did not find a lot to buy. It felt like I was buying clutter for the sake of clutter. I ended up getting the stocking stuffers at Kroger. Consumables are always great.

The grandparents gave the kids each a $25 gift card. My kids had a 24 hour flu for Christmas so I took the recovered child to Wal-Mart after Christmas. It wasn't as busy as I would have expected. There was quite a bit of clearance merchandise left on the shelves, but the only thing I bought was a few rolls of made in the USA wrapping paper. I have basically everything else I need. I did get to see a loudly cussing person of Wal-Mart and an official card carrying Santa Claus dressed in red and green suspenders. At least my trip was worth the while.

Went to the mall today, Belks was almost empty, so was Maurice's. I was only gone maybe an hour before I had what I wanted and was back home...

I was at our mall the day after Christmas. The only store that appeared to be busier than normal was Bath & Body Works. I took advantage of the sales at several clothing stores to add to my wardrobe, but they weren't busy at all! I was often only one of two shoppers in the entire store.

I was a total scrooge this year. Absolutely no Christmas shopping at all. None, zero!

All my friends and I are in agreement not to do gifts. We have more than we need in our houses, and I sure don't want to dust anything else!

My grands have so many gifts, they don't need any more from me.

While in Florida we did drive by a mall on our way to the pacific the day after Christmas, and noticed how full the parking lots were.

I try to stay out of malls at this time of year. Several years ago, I ventured out on Christmas Eve for a couple of last-minute gifts. The roads around my nearest mall were hopelessly grid-locked. It scared me so much I try to get my shopping done by mid-December. .

Our parking lots are FULL. Grocery shopping has to be done early morning. CL is giving away tube type TV's like crazy because of all the flat screens purchased. Looks like a healthy economy to me....

Sounds like a mixed (shopping) bag. I'm sure the financial pundits will be reporting the good or bad numbers soon.

Why on earth is the stock market climbing when we are discontinuing so much unemployment funding? I've heard that for every dollar in stipends, two get put into the economy.

I went to $General and Kroger's this afternoon, Both were busy with customers waiting in line.

Also at Kroger's gas pumps, all lanes were filled.
