It's tough for little kids to know that some words have more than one meaning. I was trying to tell my grandchild that the outside of a tree is "bark" and what the dog does is also "bark."

I heard a funny store about a 3 year old. Most want to watch cartoon type movies, not this little. When you ask her what she wants to watch she replies with: The Biggest Little Whore House in Texas. Her Grandmother said she does not understand what it's about but she laughs through the whole thing.

This is my classic kindergarten story of all 22 years I taught. We always said the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. Of course at the beginning of the year, most of the children do not know it or if they do, its their own version. The principal often would choose a child from one class to come to the office to "lead" the whole school over the speaker system. One morning it was one of my students.
The child was very confident and spoke very clearly and at an appropriate pace (most of the older kids raced through it and we had practiced it ). When he got to the part, "and to the.... out came the word "Publix" for which it stands." Now, if you are from the Southeast part of the country (we are in Florida), Publix is a large grocery chain and was actually founded and is based here in Lakeland, FL. So for this child, he could relate to Publix, not Republic! It also didn't help that he father worked for Publix!

Everyone thought it was so cute and it became apparent that he probably wasn't the only one saying it. But after that we had several lessons on the meaning of the words in the Pledge of Allegiance.

22 years in kindergarten is quite an accomplishment.

It's a cute story. Hearing it gives me the thought that if there were ever a purpose served by this daily practice in schools, that time might have passed. It's a rote recitation of words that even older kids (and even some adults) can't always make any sense of. I'm not sure what's accomplished by it.

Maybe singing a school song would be better, it would serve to wake the kids up. Even singing the Star Spangled Banner could be a better choice, at least it tells a short and patriotic story. Plus, then kids would be ready to participate when they go to a public sporting event.

I would contend that whether she understands it or not, a three year old should not be watching "The Best Little Whore House in Texas".

Small children do not understand the meaning of the sentences, but they understand that adults think this is something important.

The same argument can be made about religious 'rituals' that children are taught by rote.

It's up to the adults in their lives whether they ever get past the hasty mumble or learn to invest the words with meaning.

When my mother was a child she thought the old hymn celebrated a stuffed animal, "Gladly, my cross-eyed bear".

A couple thoughts here.

1. Why would the kindergarten teacher not explain to the child about words having different meanings?

2. Why would parents view the "Whore House" movie in the presence of a 3 year old?

Re the "Cross eyed bear." I've heard that one before. :)

Years ago, a friend told us that after the Christmas Cantata, she asked her 2 boys which song was their favorite. One of the boys said he liked the one about the German Shepherd. The song was "Gentle Shepherd."

The teacher may have explained double meanings, or just tried to squelch the use of potty language. Remember, my source is a 5 year old.

I remember hearing about this one at prayer time:"Halloween be thy name..."

When I was doing playground duty at an elementary school, one child came up to me to tell me that "so and so said the "S" word. Oh my.... So, I called the offending child over to see just what it was they'd said. Reluctantly, they told me they'd said "shut up". It was all I could do not to laugh, and to tell them it was certainly not nice to tell someone to shut up.

When my now 15 yr old gs was about 3 he was here with me and the dog started barking at nothing in particular,so i said"shut up percy",Markus pipes up and says"Nana,don't say shut up,say be quiet please" Oops,i'm sorry,be quiet percy.LOL

Just tonight my niece told me her five year old daughter said "let's sing the Dumber Boy song" lol.
